ATLANTA -- Nathan Eovaldi wanted his first career complete game. He settled for a dominant win. Eovaldi combined with Steve Cishek on an eight-hit shutout, Jeff Mathis homered and drove in three runs, and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 7-0 on Sunday to end their six-game losing streak. Ed Lucas had a two-run single and Mathis added a two-run double in the Marlins five-run third inning. Eovaldi (3-5) halted Miamis skid and his personal five-game slide by earning his first win since July 12 against Washington. He gave up seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in eight innings, his longest start of the season. After throwing 102 pitches through eight innings, Eovaldi was not given the chance to return to the mound for the ninth. "I felt great," he said. "I really wanted to go back out there." Marlins manager Mike Redmond said it was important to give an inning to Cishek, the closer who had pitched only one inning in the last week. "I said, Cmon, Red!" Eovaldi said with a laugh. Cishek worked around a walk and single to get the final three outs. Eovaldi earned his first win in six career starts against Atlanta. He began the day with a 2.79 ERA against the Braves. He threw seven shutout innings, allowing only one hit, but received a no-decision in the Marlins 1-0 win at Atlanta on Aug. 10. Eovaldi said he could relax after his teammates gave him a 7-0 lead. "It was awesome," he said. "We blew it open in the third and I was able to relax, go right after the hitters." Braves rookie Alex Wood (3-3) yielded seven runs in 2 1-3 innings as Atlantas six-game winning streak ended. It was a rare poor outing for Wood, a left-hander who was 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in five August starts. His overall ERA climbed from 2.27 to 3.15. "Maybe experiencing it this time will help him the next time," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. Wood, making his fourth appearance and second start of the season against the Marlins, didnt agree with the suggestion that Miamis hitters made adjustments to his pitches and delivery. "I dont think it has anything to do with them getting a second look," Wood said. "Ive thrown against some other teams more than once. "Give them credit. They beat me like a drum today." Veteran pitcher Freddy Garcia, called up from Triple-A Gwinnett before the game, replaced Wood in the third. The 36-year-old Garcia threw 4 2-3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk. "Freddy did a good job saving our bullpen," Gonzalez said. The Braves acquired Garcia from the Orioles on Aug. 23 for cash. "First-place team, youve got to be excited," Garcia said before the game. Gonzalez said Garcia could also be used as a spot starter in the final month of the regular season. Garcia is 155-106 in 16 major league seasons with Seattle, the White Sox, Philadelphia, Detroit, the Yankees and Baltimore. He was 3-5 with a 5.77 ERA in 11 games, including 10 starts, with Baltimore this season. Placido Polancos single drove in Christian Yelich in the first, and Mathis homered with two outs in the second for a 2-0 lead. The Marlins knocked Wood out of the game with five hits in the third. Donovan Solano had a run-scoring single. Miamis Jake Marisnick threw out Paul Janish at the plate in the seventh as Janish attempted to score from second on Jose Constanzas single to centre. NOTES: Braves 3B Chris Johnson was held out of the lineup with what Gonzalez said was "a little leg issue." Johnson had a pinch-hit single in the ninth. ... Marlins OF Chris Coghlan came off the 15-day DL and entered the game in right field in the seventh. Coghlan was placed on the DL on June 9 because of right calf nerve irritation, but a back strain was the more serious injury. ... Miami recalled RHP Chris Hatcher and LHP Zach Phillips from Triple-A New Orleans. ... Miami 1B Logan Morrison said his left knee was fine. He fouled a ball off the knee on Saturday. ... Miami OF Justin Ruggiano did not start due to slight tightness in his calf but was available as a pinch-hitter, according to Redmond. ... Chan captured two silver medals at last months Sochi Winter Games — mens singles and the inaugural team event. But he doesnt have the urge to resume training to defend his world title when the event is held in Saitama, Japan, later this month. However, the 23-year-old said hes committed to chasing a fourth world championship at some point. "Honestly, I know in my heart I want to win another world championship ... I really dont feel like this is the end," Chan said during a conference call. "(After Sochi) I asked myself if I could see myself training at the immediate moment, like right now could I go into training like I did before the Games? "I really didnt see that as a possibility. I already went to a world championships after an Olympic Games (2010 in Vancouver) so I really wanted to enjoy coming home and enjoying the medal and enjoying it with the rest of Canada this time because I didnt have that chance last time. I really wanted to enjoy myself with these two medals." Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who also earned two silver medals in Sochi, wont compete at the world championships either. Both were non-commital about their future but the expectation is the two-time world champions and 2010 Olympic champions will retire. "We werent sure how wed feel after the Olympics in Sochi and we ended on such a high note," Virtue said. "We were so pleased with our performances, both short and free dance, and just thrilled with the experience we had at the Olympics it just seems like the right way to end the season. "Kind of a nice way to say good-bye to those two programs." Virtue and Moir finished second in Sochi to Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, with the two teams sharing the same coach, Russian Marina Zoueva. Afterwards, the Canadians publicly questioned Zouevas loyalties. "Some of the things we were honest about at that press conference would come as no surprise to Marina," Virtue said. "She was very aware of the situation. "We travelled to Moscow and did two shows after the closing ceremonies and Meryl and Charlie also did their shows and it was a really nice way to cap off the Olympics with spending time with the two of them in a care-free, fun environment where we could just talk about our experiencees.ddddddddddddI think we probably talked more in that day than we have in the past few years because the pressure was off and we were able to just chat as friends again. It was a nice way to end that chapter with them." While their competitive seasons are over, Moir, Virtue and Chan wont be hanging up their blades. All three will tour and perform with Stars on Ice. "I think were more comfortable trying to take advantage of some of the opportunities after an Olympic Games," Moir said. "Were very much at peace with where were at." Chan was second at the 2010 world championships after finishing fifth at the Vancouver Games, winning his first global crown the following year. The 23-year-old had a glorious opportunity to win gold in Sochi after 19-year-old rival Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan struggled in his free skate. But Chan couldnt take advantage. Twice he faltered during jumps, putting his hand on the ice to keep from falling, and stumbled on a third in settling for the silver behind Hanyu. Chan said he, Virtue and Moir attended a function Monday with Caroline Ouellette, a member of Canadas gold medal-winning womens hockey team. Chan admitted he was somewhat envious of Ouellettes medal. "A gold medal is really, really nice and its different and I definitely get a spell of jealousy," he said. "At the same time I have to look at the experience I had and how different of a sport figure skating is. "These silver medals were not easy to get, they were probably just as hard as a gold medal is. One or two mistakes too many and just in that moment it came out of my grasp. Its a bit of a reminder but again its also a good challenge to kind of stay positive and look at the brighter side of things." Canada will send a 17-member team at the world championships. Olympian Kevin Reynolds, who was 15th at Sochi, will lead Canadas three-man singles team in Japan when the competition begins March 24. Both of Canadas women from the Sochi Games are entered in the worlds. Kaetlyn Osmond was 13th in Russia, and Gabrielle Daleman 17th. Other Canadian Olympians who will compete at Saitama are Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, who were seventh in pairs; Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, who were fifth; and Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers, who came 14th. Ice dancers Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, seventh at Sochi, and Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam, 18th, will compete at the worlds.
