PITTSBURGH -- Heath Millers surgically repaired right knee is good to go. Jonathan Dwyers slimmed down body, not so much. The Pittsburgh Steelers activated Miller, their two-time Pro Bowl tight end, off the physically unable to perform list on Saturday, clearing the way for Miller to play in the season opener against Tennessee on Sept. 8. Miller tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee last December against Cincinnati. He hinted last week he was close to a return, a major boost for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as the Steelers try to bounce back from an 8-8 season. The 30-year-old Miller caught a team-high 71 passes for 819 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012. His presence takes some of the pressure off second-year tight end David Paulson, who has emerged as a legitimate receiving threat during the preseason but remains a work in progress when called on to block. Dwyer led the Steelers with 623 yards rushing a year ago and entered training camp in a three-way battle with Isaac Redman and LeVeon Bell for the starting job. The former Georgia Tech star slimmed down in the off-season, dropping 25 pounds off his 6-foot frame hoping the lighter weight would make him quicker and more durable. That durability appeared to give Dwyer the inside track for the top spot on the depth chart when Bell went down with a sprained right foot and Redman was slowed by a stinger. Dwyer ran for a team-high 136 yards in the preseason, but that didnt stop the Steelers from acquiring first-round pick Felix Jones from Philadelphia as insurance. Jones played well enough over Pittsburghs final two preseason games to make Dwyer expendable. Jones and LaRod Stephens-Howling, who missed time during camp with a minor knee injury, are the two healthiest members of the backfield heading into the opener. While Bells foot problem isnt considered too serious, coach Mike Tomlin has given no timetable for the second-round picks return and Redman hasnt played since the preseason opener. Other notable Steelers cuts include three-time Pro Bowl punter Brian Moorman. The 37-year-old engaged in a lengthy battle with incumbent Drew Butler for the punting and holding duties, but couldnt do enough to convince special teams co-ordinator Danny Smith to give him the job. Pittsburgh also released nose tackle Alameda Taamu. The fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft endured a troubled time with the Steelers. He was arrested last October following a chaotic chase in Pittsburghs South Side. Taamu was driving the wrong way down a one-way street when police attempted to stop him. Instead he ran, crashing into four cars, injuring a woman in a parked SUV and attempting to flee on foot before being taken into custody. He eventually pleaded guilty to charges of reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and driving under the influence and will be on probation until October 2014. Thanks to an assist from defensive end Cameron Heyward, Taamu shed 30 pounds over the spring and finally appeared to be in shape, but couldnt make inroads behind starter Steve McLendon and backup Al Woods. Two picks in this years draft, cornerback Terry Hawthorne (fifth round) and wide receiver Justin Brown (sixth round), also failed to make the 53-man roster. Linebackers Marshal McFadden, Alan Baxter, Terrence Garvin and Brian Rolle were edged out following a camp-long battle for depth at the deepest position on the team. .05 million next season unless Graham and the Saints subsequently agree on a long-term deal. The designation was released Monday after the deadline passed for NFL teams to use franchise or transition tags on players becoming free agents. Murray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3 to clinch Britains opening-round victory against the United States on Sunday at Petco Park. The 29-year-old Baines has established himself as one of the top attacking full backs in the country and was the subject of two bids from United during the last off-season. Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that keeping Baines at the club is a "massive boost and exciting for the future" because he brings "maturity and football knowledge in a very specialized position on the pitch" and an "infectious and positive influence to the rest of the squad. ... White Steelers Jersey . Any real chance at payback wont come until the playoff. Still, Pittsburgh knows its taut 3-2 win over the Bruins on Wednesday night is a pretty good place to start laying the groundwork. "They are a very good defensive team," Penguins forward Brandon Sutter said.Sean Monahan is sticking around. The Calgary Flames announced the rookie forward will stay with the team past his “nine-game NHL tryout," activating the first full season of his three-year entry-level contract. "We believe his development is best served with us," GM Jay Feaster said in the team release. "We feel good about him. We feel good about the decision weve made." "Hes a 19-year-old going on 29 years old." It was expected the Flames would send Monahan back to his junior team, the Otttawa 67s, before his entry-level deal kicked in but his impressive play to start the season made the team think twice.dddddddddddd. The just-turned 19-year-old has six goals and nine points in his first nine games, helping the Flames to a surprisingly competitive start the season, with a record of 4-3-2. The Flames also tweeted that they will make a decision on Monahans potential participation in the World Junior Championship closer to the start of the tournament.
