BOSTON -- Evan Turner wasnt waiting for his coach to call timeout. Once he got the ball, he knew he had to take the last shot. Fortunately for the Philadelphia 76ers, it went in at the buzzer. "I wasnt listening at all," Turner said. "I was just going to get it and try to get a good shot up." He drove into the key and went up for the short shot that gave the 76ers a 95-94 win over Boston on Wednesday night as they jumped ahead of the Celtics in the standings -- out of last place in the Atlantic Division. The win "is huge" for the teams confidence, Turner said. "We pulled through and came back from giving up a lead." Deciding whether to call a timeout "is one of the most difficult decisions because it seems like life is in slow motion," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said. "Ive learned the busted play, the broken play, the random play is probably as good an environment as youre going to get often." Trailing by one, Michael Carter-Williams rebounded the ball after Kris Humphries missed a jumper with 12 seconds left. The rookie dribbled then gave the ball to Turner just past midcourt. And when Turner was guarded by a defender four inches shorter, he was in good shape. "I saw Jerryd Bayless switch on to me as opposed to Jeff Green, so I knew I had a little bit of an advantage," Turner said. He released his shot just in time to give the 76ers only their third win in 13 games. "Evan Turner has a history of doing that in those situations," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "Thats why I thought hed shoot it." The Celtics (15-33) lost for the 19th time in 22 games. Spencer Hawes led Philadelphia (15-31) with 20 points and tied his career high with four 3-pointers. Turner had 16 points and eight assists and Thaddeus Young added 16 points. Jared Sullinger led Boston with 24 points and 17 rebounds but missed 16 of 25 shots. "He played his best game in a while but he still didnt shoot it the way that hes used to shooting it," Stevens said. "That said, we have to have great performances to win." Green had 18 points, but just five after the first quarter for Boston. Sullinger had broken a 90-90 tie with two free throws, putting Boston ahead with 3:06 left. Then both teams had trouble connecting from the line. Carter-Williams missed one of two for the 76ers, Bayless missed two for the Celtics and Young also missed two. Carter-Williams missed another one before sinking his second, tying the game at 92 with 1:01 remaining. Humphries put Boston back on top when he tipped in Sullingers missed layup with 42 seconds remaining. Philadelphias free throw troubles seemed to end when Turner made one, cutting Bostons lead to 94-93. But he missed the second and Bayless rebounded. That possession ended when Humphries missed his jumper, setting up the 76ers for the winning shot. Trailing 74-71 after the third quarter, the Celtics opened the fourth with a 15-4 run that gave them an 86-78 lead four minutes into the period. They hit three 3-pointers during the surge, two by Chris Johnson and one by Green. But the 76ers responded with a 12-4 spurt and tied the game at 90, capping it with back-to-back dunks by James Anderson and Young. Boston led 26-23 after the first quarter, but Philadelphia scored the first 10 points of the second to take a seven-point lead. Hawes began the surge with consecutive 3-pointers before Dewayne Dedmon made a layup and a dunk. An eight-point run gave the 76ers a 48-34 lead, but the Celtics cut that to 53-47 at halftime. NOTES: The 76ers made 14 of 25 free throws two nights after hitting 25 of 26 in a 124-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns. ... Boston G Rajon Rondo sat out the game after playing Tuesday night in a 114-88 loss to the New York Knicks. The Celtics are winless in the six games Rondo played since returning from a torn ACL that cut short his 2012-13 season. ...Their other starting guard, Avery Bradley, missed his fifth game with a sprained right ankle, but coach Brad Stevens said hes "very close" to returning. ... The 76ers began the night allowing an NBA-worst 109.9 points per game. . Detroit and Boston are deadlocked, 1-1, and Tigers manager Jim Leyland could be forgiven if he was caught rationalizing instead of dissecting how his club could blow a 5-1 lead late in Game 2. Andrew Wiggins made 10-of-12 from the foul line and scored 17 for Kansas (14-4, 5-0 Big 12), which capped a stretch of four straight games against ranked opponents unscathed.MANCHESTER, England -- Jose Mourinho endured his first Premier League loss since returning to Chelsea at Everton on Saturday, while Manchester City was frustrated in a draw at Stoke. For Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham, however, there were routine victories as the league swung back into action for the first time since the transfer window closed in the international break. Samuel Etoo failed to make an immediate scoring impact on his Chelsea debut as Steven Naismith gave Everton a 1-0 win. Naismith headed into the net from close range in first-half stoppage time on his 27th birthday after Nikica Jelavic nodded the ball across to the forward. While it was Roberto Martinezs first win as Everton manager after three draws, Chelsea has two wins from four league matches since Mourinho -- the self-styled "Special One" -- returned after six years. "It was a special game, a special opposition and a very good performance," Martinez said. Mourinho saw things differently. "We didnt deserve to lose because we were the best team because we played the best football because we dominated the whole game," he said. Arsenal reaped some early reward from its decision to spend a club-record 50 million euros ($66 million) on Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day two weeks ago. The Germany playmaker set up Olivier Giroud for the opener before in-form Aaron Ramsey scored twice in a 3-1 win at Sunderland. A third straight win maintained Arsenals resurgence after a demoralizing opening-day defeat to Aston Villa. "Youve seen what he is all about, slipping those balls in," Ramsey said of Ozil, who was substituted after 80 minutes on his debut. "He has one of highest assist rates in Europe and he is going to create a lot of opportunities for us." Manchester Citys mixed start to the season continued by scraping a 0-0 draw at Stoke. United was also far from fluent in aa 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace that turned on a contentious decision to send off Kagisho Dikgacoi in the 43rd minute for a foul on Ashley Young.dddddddddddd Despite the challenge coming outside the area, a penalty was awarded -- and converted by Robin van Persie -- before Wayne Rooney curled in an 81st-minute free kick to hand David Moyes a first success at Old Trafford. Rooney was playing with a thick headband to cover a deep cut to the forehead sustained in a training-ground incident two weeks ago. Tottenham began life without Gareth Bale, who joined Real Madrid two weeks ago, by outclassing Norwich 2-0 with a double from Gylfi Sigurdsson, who was set up for his first goal by new signing Christian Eriksen. Arsenal and Tottenham are level on nine points while the Manchester rivals both are on 7. Liverpool protects its perfect start to the season when it plays Swansea on Monday. Elsewhere Saturday, France playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa scored one and set up another as Newcastle beat Aston Villa 2-1 away for its second victory in a row. West Bromwich Albion claimed its first point of the season by scoring in injury time for a 1-1 draw at Fulham and Hull drew 1-1 with Cardiff in a match between two promoted clubs. While United was thankful for a refereeing decision to turn its game against Palace, Arsenal also benefited from a debatable call at the Stadium of Light when the score was 2-1. United States striker Jozy Altidore beat Bacary Sagna to the ball and prodded home a finish, only for the referee to bring play back for an earlier foul against Arsenal. It was too much for combustible Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio, who was sent from the dugout in injury time. "He came to me and said if you keep going with your manner, I send you up to the stand," Di Canio said. "I said to him, If you want to complete a perfect job, you send me off and that is what he did."
