PINEHURST, N.C. -- Pinehursts No. 2 course will be set up the same way for both U.S. Open and U.S. Womens Open this year. U.S. Golf Association Executive Director Mike Davis said Saturday that the par-70 course will play at about 7,500 yards for the mens and about 6,700 yards for the women. "On a given hole, if the men are hitting drivers, we want to see the women hit drivers," he said during the USGAs annual meeting. "If the men are hitting 6- to 8-irons for approach shots, thats what we want to see the women do." The USGA is roughly four months away from its first-of-its-kind doubleheader: The mens event is June 12-15 with the womens tournament the following week. "While we want to test the same things for both championships, there are differences in how men and women play the game," Davis said. Davis says the USGAs reason for going back-to-back was to bring more attention to the womens game. "This was never about trying to make it operationally easier or save money," Davis said. "This was all about comparing the worlds best men with the worlds best women." He says the women are playing the second week -- and not the first -- because of agronomics. "We had a much better chance of getting the golf course right for both championships" with the women playing second, he said. "It really gets down to the putting greens. The first week, if Mother Nature is co-operative, theyre going to be slightly firmer. ... Very firm greens to slightly -- underscore, slightly -- less firm greens that second week. And agronomically, it was much easier to do the second week than the first." The 107-year-old, Donald Ross-designed course underwent a $2.5 million renovation in 2010-11. The face-lift, led by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, was designed to restore some of its original elements in plenty of time for the two opens -- including removing all traces of rough. With so much foot traffic expected on the course during the doubleheader, divots are inevitable -- especially during the second week. But Davis says the Bermuda grass isnt as divot-prone as bent grass, and says they will be filled with sand. "I think our view is (divots are) just part of the game," he said. Davis says the USGA wants to blend the two opens together, in a way -- perhaps by having some womens players show up in the TV booth on the 18th green to break down the mens play. "While theyre clearly two different championships, were looking at it as one big event," Davis said. "This is really a chance, on the same golf course, to test the worlds best." Also, Thomas J. OToole Jr. was elected as USGAs 63rd president. The 56-year-old OToole, from St. Louis, will serve a one-year term. "It is an honour and a privilege to lead such a noble organization," OToole said. VANCOUVER -- Its early yet, but the Vancouver Whitecaps are showing signs that they will be more of an attacking team this season. Kenny Miller scored two goals as the Whitecaps opened the 2014 Major League Soccer campaign with a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 21,000 at B.C. Place Stadium. "Were absolutely delighted with the way weve played," said Miller. "A lot of the things that we worked on in the pre-season really came into fruition today." The Whitecaps had been concerned with how their offence would shape up after losing 2013 MLS scoring leader Camilo Sanvezzo to a Mexican League team this off-season. Miller scored on a penalty-kick in the 34th minute and a breakaway in the 70th while second-half substitute Pedro Morales had a goal and an assist. Sebastian Fernandez also scored for the Whitecaps, who missed the playoffs in 2013. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored for New York with only two minutes left in the game. The Red Bulls placed first overall in the regular season last year but were ousted early in the playoffs. Carl Robinson, who pledged during the pre-season to put more offence in Vancouvers game, posted his first regular-season win as Vancouvers head coach following two years as an assistant to Martin Rennie. "I think it was written in the stars, the way the first game came out, and it was my old team, things like that," said Robinson, a former Red Bulls player and assistant coach. "But its just the beginning." Despite starting eight returnees, Robinson succeeded in his quest to create more scoring opportunities from mid-field as new midfielders Fernandez and Morales also hit the scoresheet. Vancouvers midfield play has been the subject of intense criticism the past two seasons. But the Whitecaps controlled play in the middle of the pitch for most of the game, generating several chances in the first half that were missed or stopped by New York goalkeeper Luis Robles, who kept the score lower than it could have been. Vancouver had 10 shots on target compared to New Yorks four. The Whitecaps put six shots on target in the first half. "Its what the boss (Robinson) wants," said Miller. "He wants them to be up against it. He wants us (forwards) to be pressing from the front and working hard." The Whitecaps remained unbeaten in five all-time meetings with the Red Bulls, who only put four shots on target in the game. The Red Bulls showed signs of fatigue in the second half after a long travel day from the East Coast on Friday. But defender Richard Eckersley, who made his regular-season debut along with fellow fullback Bobby Convey after an off-season trade from Toronto, said the long trip was not a factor. "What can you do?" Robles got his hand on the shot, but could not stop the ball from going in. Vancouver went ahead 3-0 as Morales sent Miller a long lead ball from deep in Vancouver territory. Miller ran onto it well beyond defenders and lobbed a bouncing ball over a helpless Robles. "I think weve seen, with (Morales) coming on, his vision -- his awareness in whats going on," said Miller. "There were a couple little flips out of the corner. Thats not by chance. He knows theres a guy in space and, obviously, that pass on my second goal was a sublime pass. But hes finished as well.
