Carry the flag. Train. See my kids. Get ready,” said the 37-year-old Whitfield. This is the first Olympics for Whitfield to have his kids joining him on location. His eldest daughter, Pippa, was two-years old and did not make the trip to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Pippa, now 5, and Evelyn, 2, will be staying with mom, Jennie, at a house on their own. Whitfield said he brought his visor and rain jacket to prepare for the citys damp weather. “We live in Victoria, so were used to the rain but Ive been out in Hamilton, Ontario, getting used to the heat,”Whitfield said. The two-time Olympic medallist said he would prefer hot temperatures on race day like the one in Beijing four years ago where he won a silver medal. Whitfield was joined by fellow triathlete Paula Findlay, 23, who was in high spirits after battling a right hip injury over the past year to make her first Olympic Games. “Ive been training better in the past few months than I have all year and I finally have this injury under control,” Findlay told CTV. “Up until even a few weeks ago I was not sure that I would be here and its been a really crazy journey.” The five-time World Championship Series Events winner said the pain in her hip is gone and she is ready to be a medal contender on Aug. 4. “Staying positive has been my biggest ally through all of this and having a really great support team,” the Edmonton native said. Findlay has competed in two races over the last couple of weeks. She said she used them as workouts to see where her fitness level was. “In the winter I was thinking I would never race again potentially, so its pretty cool to be able to get those under my belt and have a little more confidence heading into this race,” Findlay said. She thanks Whitfield for his wealth of experience in the triathlon and for letting her work with his coach, John Brown. “Its been so beneficial to me.
