MONACO -- Bayern Munich and France midfielder Franck Ribery won the UEFA Best Player in Europe award for the 2012-2013 season on Thursday, beating Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by a big margin. Ribery earned 36 votes in the poll of journalists from across Europe -- 23 more than four-time reigning world player of the year Messi. Real Madrid forward Ronaldo won three votes. "Its a very special moment to be standing here this evening," Ribery said after receiving the award following the draw for the group stage of the Champions League in Monaco. The 30-year-old Ribery was instrumental to Bayern Munichs incredible season in which the team won the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup. "This distinction rewards Franck for the magnificent season he had with his club and above all underlines his magnificent talent which allows him to be considered among the best players in the world," French Football Federation President Noel Le Graet said. "Everyone in French football is very proud, and are with me in congratulating him." The three-man shortlist was selected by a panel of 53 journalists drawn from each of UEFAs member nations. The same journalists then voted for the winner. UEFA created the award after France Football magazine combined its traditional European accolade with FIFAs world player prize. Messi won the inaugural prize in 2011 but was beaten by Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta last year. Elliott, the son of former Sprint Cup driver Bill Elliott, plowed into Dillon on the final turn on the 2.459-mile road course to take the lead and went on to his first series victory. At 17 years, 9 months, 4 days, he became the youngest winner in series history. "We only have so many shots to win these things. I really hate to win them like that, I really do," Elliott said. "Thats not how I race and thats never been how Ive raced before. I had a shot. I was up next to Ty and I knew he was going to try and chop me off. I tried to make up the difference. ... Elliott, driving for Hendrick Motorsports in only his sixth series start, further explained the wreck. "Had two ideas that didnt work out for me and had an opportunity there getting into 10," Elliott said. "I felt like the 3 (Dillon) was sputtering. I felt like he was really, really close or he was out of gas or something and got to his right rear quarterpanel and tried to move him out of the way and unfortunately ended up putting him in the fence. ... "He obviously wasnt happy. He has a right not to be happy. I wouldnt have been happy, either, but at the same time, like we all three said, youve got to do what youve got to do."
