The Peterborough Petes havent had much to get excited about this season, but Jonatan Tanus made sure their new captain won his first game at the helm. The Finnish rookie scored the only goal of the shootout Thursday as the Petes upset the Kitchener Rangers 3-2 in the Ontario Hockey League. Derek Mathers, in his first game as the Petes captain after a series of trades sent a number of veterans packing, and Nick Czinder scored in regulation for Peterborough (12-24-5), which got 36 saves from Andrew DAgostini. Brent Pederson and Evan McEneny replied for Kitchener (22-13-6). Joel Vienneau made 32 saves in taking the loss. Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Windsor 3, Brampton 0; Niagara 3, Owen Sound 2 (SO); Barrie 5, Mississauga 4 (SO). At Peterborough, two of the Petes first three shooters hit the post in the shootout, but neither team could connect through the first three rounds. Tanus then slid the puck through Vienneaus five-hole to give his team the edge. With boos raining down from the crowd on Derek Schoenmakers, who had refused to report to the Petes after being traded to the club before Christmas, the overage player couldnt beat DAgostini. Mathers, who took of as captain after Slater Koekkoek was dealt by Peterborough on Wednesday, scored unassisted on a breakaway just 32 seconds into the game. Czinder scored in his first game as with the Petes at 15:09 of the first to make it 2-0 after coming to the team in one of three trades which saw Peterborough deal away its three leading scorers ahead of Thursdays deadline. The Petes held a 2-0 lead through the scoreless second period, but Pederson and McEneny scored in the third to send the game to overtime. Spitfires 3, Battalion 0 At Windsor, Ont., Jaroslav Pavelka made 38 saves as the Spitfires (15-19-6) shut out Brampton (19-17-7). --- IceDogs 3, Attack 2 (SO) At St. Catharines, Ont., Ben Hughes beat Jordan Binnington in the fifth round of the shootout as Niagara (23-16-3) got past Owen Sound (25-12-3). --- Colts 5, Steelheads 4 (SO) At Barrie, Ont., Steven Beyers scored the only goal of the shootout as the Colts (27-12-1) edged Mississauga (20-15-4). Rios was trying to break up a double play and when he went into Detroit second baseman Omar Infante, it caused an errant throw that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score Monday as the White Sox beat the Tigers 5-4 and went up three games in division. Clyde Drexler Rockets Jersey . - Canadian Steve Nash sliced through the lane, broke down the defence, and created shots for Kobe Bryant time and again, just the way he has for teammates throughout his brilliant 17-year NBA career. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers have added more depth to their already deep stable of running backs. The Panthers announced Monday theyve signed free agent Mike Tolbert from the San Diego Chargers. Tolbert spent three seasons with Ron Rivera, who was the Chargers defensive co-ordinator before becoming the Panthers head coach. "Mike is a very versatile player and is they type of player who do a lot of different things," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "He can jump in and play fullback, he catches the ball well out of the backfield and plays running back. Hes also an outstanding special teams player." Tolberts agent Joel Turner said his client signed a four-year contract, but would not disclose the financial terms of the deal. However, he said Tolbert was so excited about joining Carolina that he left over $1 million on the table on an offer from San Diego. "Thats how bad he wanted to play there," Turner said. "He loves the idea of playing for Ron Rivera and being on the same team with Cam Newton. He just thinks its a great fit." Tolbert has spent all four of his seasons in the NFL with San Diego. He had 490 yards rushing and 433 yards receiving on 54 catches last season and scored 10 touchdowns while splitting time with Ryan Mathews. His best season came in 2010 when he led the Chargers with 735 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. Tolbert has started 15 games and played in 59 during his four years with the Chargers. A former player at Coastal Carolina, Tolbert was eager to get back to the East coast and liked what he saw from the Panthers organization, Turner said. The question now is what this meaans for the rest of Carolinas backfield.dddddddddddd Carolina already had one of the deepest and most talented backfields in the league with DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson. All three are under contract for next season but one could be moved. The Panthers signed Williams to a five-year contract last summer and have been trying to lock up Stewart to a long-term extension as well. "Mikes signing has does not mean were trying to trade DeAngelo or Jonathan," Hurney said. "Were making no attempts to trade either one of them. Weve made no calls and will make no calls. We view DeAngelo and Jonathan as very valuable members of our team." The speedy Goodson has success at the end of John Foxs regime in 2010 with three straight 100-yard games, but could be the odd man out. He struggled with fumbling last season and fell out of favour with Rivera and barely played at all as the season progressed. The Panthers like Tolberts versatility, although hes expected to see most of his action at fullback. Although hes a talented ball carrier, the 5-foot-9, 243-pound Tolbert has played some fullback with the Chargers and proven he can be a run-blocker. Hes also a talented receiver out of the backfield with 109 career receptions, including six touchdowns. Tolbert is also a contributor on special teams. He had 12 tackles last season for the Chargers, tying for the team lead. The Panthers have made strides this off-season to upgrade their special teams play. "It was a good fit and gives us a chance to add another weapon on offence," Hurney said. "We are excited about bringing him back to the Carolinas." ' ' '
