LAS VEGAS -- Two people who were appointed to the Nevada Legislature on Friday will play a significant role in whether a nearly $2 billion NFL stadium, and potentially the Raiders, comes to Las Vegas. But the Clark County commissioners who nominated the candidates to fill two vacant seats said they were more concerned about whether their appointees would properly vet a plan to put $750 million in public money toward the 65,000-seat venue. Critics worry that in case of a downturn, taxpayers could be left holding the bag for the project thats partially funded by billionaire casino owner and Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson.Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick said she and her recommended candidate, Democratic former Assemblywoman Stephanie Smith, didnt really have to talk about Smiths opinion of the stadium. That really wasnt my concern as much as could she ask the hard questions, did she understand government, said Kirkpatrick, who previously held the Assembly seat that Smith was named to on Friday. I think she will ask the hard questions that I would. The commissions move, which fills the final two seats out of five that were vacant, clears the way for Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval to call Nevadas 63-member Legislature into a special session. At least two-thirds of a full Legislature would need to be on board to pass a proposed hotel tax hike, which would fund the stadium, a convention center expansion and more police.Critics dont want to give public funds to a project backed by Adelson, one of the richest men in the world, rather than to education in a state with one of the countrys worst-performing school systems. They also point to experts who say stadium deals rarely yield the economic benefits they promise.Commissioner Susan Brager, who nominated Republican Kyle Stephens to fill the second vacancy, said she asked him whether hed simply go along with party leadership or whether hed be an independent voice on the deal. She said she got the right answers from Stephens, whos a longtime account representative for a janitorial supply company and has worked on Republican political campaigns.I wasnt looking for a `yes person, said Brager. Im hoping this person would stand up for what is right. While she voted for the candidates, Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani said she felt they were only being asked to do so to ensure there were enough votes for the stadium deal. When there were vacancies ahead of two recent special legislative sessions for less-controversial economic development deals, those spots were left empty. This is politics at its worst, she said. After dropping their final six games of December, the Wild opened the new calendar year with four consecutive wins. Following a loss to Colorado on Saturday, Minnesota rebounded the following night to blank Nashville 4-0, but then had the tables turned on them Tuesday. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Jalen Hurts accounted for four touchdowns and Minkah Fitzpatrick had three interceptions as No. 1 Alabama extended its nation-best winning streak to 18 games with a 49-30 victory over No. 16 Arkansas on Saturday night. The win is the 10th straight for the Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) over the Razorbacks, and Fitzpatricks 100-yard interception return for a touchdown was Alabamas 10th non-offensive score of the season.Hurts finished 13-of-17 passing for 253 yards with two touchdowns. He ran for two more TDs.Damien Harris added 122 yards rushing on 13 carries for the Crimson Tide, which finished with 517 yards of total offense and averaged 10.1 yards per play.Austin Allen completed 25 of 48 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns for Arkansas (4-2, 0-2), also throwing three interceptions as the Razorbacks finished with five turnovers overall. Arkansas finished with 473 yards of total offense, but it gained only 73 yards on the ground on 36 carries.Alabamas winning streak is now one off coach Nick Sabans best at the school. The Crimson Tide won 19 straight games over the 2009-10 seasons.THE TAKEAWAYAlabama: The three turnovers on offense werent vintage Crimson Tide, but the defensive effort -- five forced turnoovers -- was.dddddddddddd Alabama has already matched last seasons total of 10 non-offensive touchdowns.Arkansas: The Razorbacks have a mess on their hands on the offensive line. Theres no other way to put it. Arkansas began the season with three first-year starters up front, and they once again struggled in both pass protection (six sacks, numerous other hits on Allen) and running the ball -- averaging two yards per rush.POLL IMPLICATIONSNot that anyone needed more reasons to keep Alabama at the top of their ballots, but the Crimson Tide arent going anywhere after yet another convincing victory. Arkansas, meanwhile, is at the mercy of the voters after its second loss of the season -- hoping to remain ranked with No. 14 Mississippi coming to Fayetteville next week.UP NEXTAlabama: The Crimson Tide continue their most difficult four-game stretch of the season by traveling to No. 9 Tennessee, which lost to No. 8 Texas A&M on Saturday. Thats followed by a date with the undefeated Aggies and then LSU on Nov. 5.Arkansas: The Razorbacks remain at home to face the Rebels, whom they have defeated in each of the last two seasons.
