This week, they discuss Alain Vigneaults contract extension, the University of Ottawas choice for head football coach, golfing fates and Sepp Blatters stance on penalty kicks. Dave Naylor, TSN: My thumb is up to the Vancouver Canucks for their granting of an extension to coach Alain Vigneault, despite his teams first-round exit this spring. Its become highly fashionable in the NHL to make coaches scapegoats for everything, which is why, despite four straight years of at least 100 points, two Presidents Trophies and a trip to the final last spring, there was a shadow of doubt about Vigneaults future. Of course, had the Canucks fired him, there was an ideal fit waiting for him in Montreal, back with the same team that fired him a little more than a decade ago. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is down to the University of Ottawa for the hiring of new football coach Gary Etcheverry and not for the usual reasons. My thumb is down because Etcheverrys an American and last time I checked, Ottawa U was an educational institution populated by Canadians, subsidized by Canadians, primarily for Canadian students. Surely with the growth and improvement of football in this country, Ottawa U could have found itself a Canadian head coach. Heck, if someone had called me, I could have suggested a few names. But the job for now belongs to Etcheverry, who had a 2-37 record at Macalester College as a head coach. Hmm, I think a whole lot of Canadians could have done better than that. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to the golfing fates, this week personified by David Drysdale. You might not know the name, but you will remember his shot this week. On the par 5 18th hole at the Wentworth Club in England, Drysdale hit a 212-yard approach directly into a greenside canal and the ball popped out. This was no skimmer. This was a bunny hop, back onto light greenside rough. The worlds 291st ranked player made his birdie and shared the first-round lead of the European Tour event. Drysdale was in 13th place entering Sundays final round but so what? His shot is theological proof that there is a god, who probably plays Titleist. Pardon me while I interrupt the cheering from hockeys contingent of traditionalists to say thumbs down to Blatter. He wants a task force headed by the legendary German star Franz Beckenbauer to find a different way to break ties in soccer. Well, I have just one question: Which will take longer, the task force to think of a way that doesnt involve games that never end, or games that never end? JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars released veteran wide receiver Lee Evans on Sunday and signed sixth-year receiver Demetrius Williams The team also placed third-year wide receiver Taylor Price on injured reserve with a foot injury and signed guard/centre Josh Beekman. Evans signed as a free agent with the Jaguars in April after he was released a month earlier by Baltimore. Evans could have helped the Ravens earn a trip to the Super Bowl but dropped a pass in the end zone in the final minute of Januarys AFC championship game against the New England Patriots. The Patriots won 23-20. Evans played seven seasons with the Buffalo Bills before joining the Ravens in 2011. In his eight-year career, he has 381 receptions for 6,008 yards and 43 touchdowns. Evans two best seasons came in 2006 and 2008. He had career highs in 2006 when he caught 82 passes for 1,292 yards. Two years later, he topped the 1,000-yard mark again with 63 receptions for 1,017 yards. He has 14 career 100-yard receiving games, eight multi-TD games and 57 receptions of 25-plus yards. Evans and Laurent Robinson were signed as free agents during the off-season in hopees of bolstering a Jaguars wide receivers corps led by Mike Thomas 44 catches in 2011.dddddddddddd While Robinson has become the teams No. 1 receiver, Evans has seen limited action in training camp and was running behind several of the Jaguars younger receivers. Evans did not play in Fridays preseason game against the New York Giants. The 6-foot-2 Williams has played in 46 games with four starts since entering the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in 2006. He spent four seasons with the Ravens (2006-09) and caught 63 passes for 1,008 yards and four touchdowns. Two of his four career touchdown receptions are from 70-plus yards, with a 77-yard score in 2006 and 70-yard catch in 2008. Price has played in six career games, with five receptions for 80 yards. He was drafted in the third round by New England in 2010. The Jaguars claimed him off waivers on Dec. 6, 2011, and he played in two games for Jacksonville late last season. Price suffered a foot injury that limited him during spring drills. He played in the Giants game Friday but did not have a reception.
