NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees are in need of a reliable ace right now. Hiroki Kuroda has been the man for the job. Kuroda pitched a two-hitter and the Yankees got consecutive homers from Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira in a 3-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. In his first season with New York, the 37-year-old Kuroda gave a depleted rotation yet another boost with ace CC Sabathia and veteran Andy Pettitte on the disabled list. "This is a very good lineup that he just shut down," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Probably our best pitching performance of the year." Kuroda allowed only four balls out of the infield and just one runner past first base. He held Texas hitless until Elvis Andrus infield single leading off the seventh, outpitching All-Star lefty Matt Harrison in a crisp duel at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander walked two and struck out five in his fourth career shutout and second this season. He threw 74 of 109 pitches for strikes. "When youve got a great lineup like that," Kuroda said through a translator, "you cant lose your focus until the end." The surging Yankees won for the sixth time in seven games. Theyve taken the first two in a four-game set between the ALs top two teams. "Man, these games are a lot of fun to play in," Swisher said. Derek Jeter singled off Harrison (13-7) with one out in the seventh to start the New York rally. Alexi Ogando came in to face Swisher, who cracked a go-ahead grand slam off Ryan Dempster in the series opener Monday night for his first homer since July 19 -- a drought of 61 at-bats. This time, Swisher fought his way back from an 0-2 count and drove a payoff pitch to the back of the Yankees bullpen in right-centre for his 16th home run. "I was hitting on sound at that point. I mean, hes throwing 100 mph," Swisher said. "That 3-2 count, I was just hoping he would throw another fastball." The bubbly switch-hitter rounded the bases with a big grin, and New York was on its way to a seventh straight regular-season victory over the Rangers at home. "I wanted to put velocity on Swisher and he didnt beat him with it," Texas manager Ron Washington said. Teixeira then lined a shot into the right-field stands for his 23rd home run. Slowed by a lack of run support lately, Kuroda (11-8) won for the first time in four starts and lowered his ERA to 3.06. He gave up a clean single in the eighth to Michael Young, who was immediately erased on David Murphys double-play grounder. Kuroda then worked a 1-2-3 ninth to finish a gem that took 2 hours, 35 minutes. "Hes been really, really big for us and he could have a number of more wins. Hes been the hard-luck guy for us this year," Girardi said. "That was his 11th win for us. Realistically, he could have 15 or 16 at this juncture." Kuroda has six scoreless outings of at least seven innings, most in the majors. He became the first Yankees pitcher with two shutouts in a season since Mike Mussina in 2005. With his 52nd major league win, Kuroda passed Tomo Ohka for sole possession of second place among pitchers born in Japan. Hideo Nomo is first with 123. "I was doing everything I could to match him," Harrison said. Featuring a sharp slider, Kuroda worked around two walks in the first three innings and handcuffed the hard-hitting Rangers, who began the night leading the majors in batting average (.278) and runs (580). They were shut out for only the third time all season. A no-hit buzz began to build in the sixth, when second baseman Robinson Cano made a backhand play on Mitch Morelands one-out grounder. Kuroda then struck out Ian Kinsler and had retired 10 straight heading into the seventh. Andrus led off with a grounder toward the middle, forcing shortstop Jayson Nix to make a diving stop near the edge of the outfield grass. With little chance to get the speedy runner, Nix struggled to get the ball out of his glove and tried a desperation throw that was late and wide. Base hit, no question, and Kuroda received a warm round of applause from the crowd of 44,533. Andrus was stranded at third when Nelson Cruz grounded out. "I had to regroup myself a little bit, but I (said), a complete game or a shutout is not really important here," Kuroda explained. "The most important thing is for the team to win and thats what we accomplished today, and thats why Im happy." NOTES: Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez had X-rays on his broken left hand. Girardi said the hand is "definitely better" and the brace will come off, but Rodriguez isnt quite ready to swing a bat yet. He will begin doing strengthening exercises. ... The former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach confirmed Thursday hes trying to get his foot back in the Canadian Football League door on a coaching or personnel level. "Im going about my business behind the scenes and letting the cards fall where they may," Kelly said in Winnipeg after being a guest speaker at the Premier Football Factory skills and development camp. "Im not yelling and screaming, Somebody please hire me. I dont want to come off like that. My point is, I have a great passion for the CFL and would like to work in the league again." Kelly, 54, was fired by the Bombers in December 2009 after a controversial rookie season as head coach. His outspoken ways often landed him in hot water with fans, the media and CFL brass and a 7-11 record didnt help matters. Even his firing was dramatic. Just hours after Lyle Bauer resigned as the clubs president and CEO on Dec. 17, it was discovered Kelly had been charged that morning in an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend at his Pennsylvania home. After an emergency board meeting that evening, then-chairman Ken Hildahl announced the Bombers were firing Kelly and it had nothing to do with his legal trouble. The charges were later dropped and the record of it expunged. "I know I have to rebuild myself and reprove myself," Kelly said. "I understand that I have to take a step back in order to move forward and Im more than willing to do that, but I think I bring a breadth of knowledge to whatever position I have and an understanding of how to run an organization in this league." Kelly lived in Winnipeg until last August, when he got a job as offensive co-ordinator for the varsity football team at Mariner High School in Cape Coral, Fla. Hes also teaching some physical education and drivers education courses. The young team, which had a Grade 10 starting quarterback, went 3-7, but were competitive in all but two games, said Kelly, whos in Winnipeg visiting friends during the holidays. The new level of coaching was challenging and refreshing, yet he wants to get back to the professional ranks and has his agent, Terry Ray, beating the bushes. He did a phone interview with the search firm looking to hire a general manager for the Edmonton Eskimos, a job tthat went to Ed Hervey last month.dddddddddddd Kelly was Edmontons receivers coach before he got the Blue Bombers head-coaching job, which he called his "dream job." Hed been Winnipegs offensive co-ordinator from 1992-96. A few CFL teams currently have vacancies. "I still have a lot of friends in the league," Kelly said. "I do believe that people appreciate my football abilities. I think where there is some apprehension is the negative media reaction if I was hired, and I understand that. But I think time heals all. "And I think if theres anything negative put out there, I think itll be a 20-minute blip and its all over with and we move on. All Im looking for is somebody to just believe in me again because at one time I did have a pretty good reputation in this league." Ottawa is expected to have its new franchise playing in 2014 so there would be an entire staff to put together there. "I enjoy coaching and being with the players and that dynamic, but I do think I can bring somebody a pretty good background in upper management and finding players," Kelly said. League official and former CFL defensive back Dave Donaldson had Kelly coach at his Premier Football Factory camp the past two years and he was glad he could speak to the kids this week. Kelly talked to the players aged 9-18 about making the right choices, whether thats about the people they associate with or what they say or do. "We all make bad choices and we make bad decisions, but we also make good choices and good decisions so we all deserve a second chance in life," Donaldson said. "I dont think Mike murdered anybody. I dont really know the specifics of his past, I just know he was good at our camp and very helpful to the kids and he showed great mentorship." Kelly said hes "smart enough" to learn from his mistakes. "When I talk about mistakes, I think I go directly to my not taking a breath before answering some questions in public circles," he said. "I think the biggest thing that keeps me going is that all the coaches that worked with me, that I had brought in here from other places, all say that if I ever got another opportunity theyd work with me again. That tells me that I was doing the right things organizationally." ' ' '
