ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- High-priced defensive end Mario Williams is feeling the heat more than hes been applying it four games into his first season with the Buffalo Bills. And Williams complained on Wednesday that a sore left wrist thats bothered him since the start of the season isnt helping. "Its just lingering a little longer than I expected, and I just have to get back out there and try to deal with it and play better with it," Williams said, referring to an injury he sustained in the final week of the preseason. As for his production, 1 1/2 sacks, 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, Williams acknowledged he has to do better. "I just got to have more impact, more of a role in things and get back to like I used to play," he said. The two-time Pro Bowl selection and feared pass-rusher isnt anywhere near the dominating form he had during his six seasons in Houston, where he set a franchise record with 53 sacks. That was the kind of production the Bills were counting on in March, when they made Williams the NFLs most expensive defensive player by signing him to a six-year, $100 million contract. His arrival was regarded as a turning point for a small-market team making a serious commitment to retool a porous defence in a bid to end a 12-season playoff drought. Four games in, the Bills (2-2) are preparing to play at San Francisco (3-1) with a defence thats been inconsistent at best. Its coming off a monumental collapse in a 52-28 loss to New England, a game in which Buffalo surrendered 580 yards of offence -- the second most in franchise history -- and allowed the Patriots to score touchdowns on six consecutive drives during a 45-point second half. Williams was limited to two tackles on Sunday, and singled out by critics for the second time this season. "If Mario Williams doesnt start picking it up, there are going to be a lot of 2013 free agents who suffer because so far, Williams has been an argument against spending big money," said Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune in submitting his vote in the AP Pro32 rankings this week. Williams had been previously criticized by NFL safety-turned-broadcaster Rodney Harrison after failing to make a dent in a 48-28 season-opening loss at the New York Jets. Saying he tunes out outside criticism, Williams is instead motivated internally. "I feel my pressure, man," Williams said. "I mean, I know whats here and I know what I need to do." Williams presence has helped a defence that already has 10 sacks -- six more than Buffalo had through four games last year. Inconsistency, however, has been a problem. In two wins, the defence has surrendered only 31 points, 662 yards and had nine sacks and five turnovers. In two losses, Buffalos allowed 100 points and 964 yards, while managing just one sack and forced three turnovers. Bills coach Chan Gailey had a mixed response when asked of Williams production. Gailey began by saying Williams is "trying to play the best he can play." That doesnt mean there isnt room for improvement. "Can he play better? Yeah, he can play better. But theres a lot of guys that fall into that category," Gailey said, including himself as a coach. "Does everybody wish his numbers were up? Yeah." Gailey also couldnt assess how much the wrist injury is bothering Williams, but noted the injury hasnt been severe enough to have the player listed on the teams injury report. Its unclear when Williams was hurt, though he was first spotted having his hand wrapped in practice on Labor Day. Williams said he was hurt during a "freak" occurrence, and added the injury has affected his pass-rushing ability because he uses his hands in trying to beat blockers. "Its just been a little odd just having a little knick or whatever, and not being able to use it to the full extent," Williams said. "But you know, you got to play. ... If youre out there on the field, youve got to make it happen." NOTES: S Jairus Byrd (hip) missed practice Wednesday, but is expected to return Thursday, while DT Spencer Johnson did not practice due to an ankle injury. ... LT Cordy Glenn and RG Kraig Urbik are both expected to be out after hurting their right ankles last weekend. ... The Bills signed OL Reggie Stephens to their practice squad and released WR Kamar Aiken. Stephens, a 2010 seventh-round draft pick by Cincinnati, spent his rookie season with the Bengals. wholesale jerseys . HOUSTON -- Chris Kaman scored half as many points as O.J. Mayo for the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night. Considering the way Kamans left ankle looked, those 20 points were just as impressive to coach Rick Carlisle. Mayo tied a career high with 40 points, including 10 in the last three minutes, to lift the Mavericks to a 116-109 victory over the Rockets in coach Kevin McHales return to the Houston bench. Kaman left the Mavericks last game on Thursday night with a sprained left ankle. He started Saturday night and played more than 18 minutes despite the left side of his ankle being almost completely covered by a deep purple bruise. "Kaman showed a lot of guts even being out there," Carlisle said. "He went out there and gave us everything he had. Hes obviously struggling laterally, but to put up the scoring numbers that he did is phenomenal. Its proves a lot to the team." Kaman also had seven rebounds for Dallas, and Vince Carter and Darren Collison had 12 points apiece. "With guys down ... and hurting a little bit, guys came and battled tonight," Kaman said. "O.J. played an unbelievable game for us. We got stops at the end on (James) Harden when we had to." Harden had 30 points at halftime, but the Mavericks slowed him down in the second half. He scored just nine points in the second half. McHale rejoined the team on Saturday after almost a month away from the team, and two weeks after the death of his daughter. "It meant a lot to have him in the locker room ... and it showed how much he wanted to be here because hes been through a lot and hes here with us working," Houstons Carlos Delfino said. McHale said he was excited to be back and hoped it was the right time to return. He said after the game that he has a lot of work to do. "It was different being out there again," McHale said. "I had been away for a long time and we had put in some stuff. Ive got to get caught up, so these next few days will be good for us." A three-point play by Harden cut the Dallas lead to two points before a jump shot by Mayo made it 109-104. A 3-pointer by Toney Douglas seconds later put Houston back within two with about a minute to go, but Mayos 3 seconds later extended the lead and the Mavericks held on for the win. Carlisle also raved about Mayo, who tied a season high with eight rebounds, and has scored more than 30 points three times this season. "What he is showing over the first 20 games is that he has the ability to carry a team at times, andd it was really impressive tonight," he said.dddddddddddd The Rockets battled back from a 19-point deficit with a strong second quarter to lead at halftime and were up by nine points with 7 1/2 to go. But Mayo got hot and the Rockets came up short as Dallas extended its winning streak in the series to eight games. McHale took a leave of absence on Nov. 10 to be with his family as his daughters health worsened. Alexandra "Sasha" McHale died Nov. 24 of complications from Lupus. She was 23. Many of the Mavericks went over to McHale and hugged or patted him after introductions, and he received a standing ovation when the public address announcer welcomed him back to the team. Dallas used a 13-2 run to take a 102-100 lead with about 4 1/2 minutes left. Carter scored five points to power the run, and Brandan Wright capped it with a dunk. Chandler Parsons made the second of two free throws for the Rockets before Mayo scored five quick points to extend the Mavericks lead to 107-101 with less than three minutes left. Parsons finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Harden had nine assists and six rebounds. The Rockets opened the second half with a 10-4 run to extend their lead to 76-67 with 8 1/2 minutes left in the quarter. The Rockets continued their hot 3-point shooting from the first half early in the quarter as Harden and Jeremy Lin both hit 3s to power that run. Dallas got going after that and an 8-2 spurt got the Mavericks within 78-75 with about five minutes left in the third quarter. Houston was up by eight near the end of the third quarter, but Jae Crowders 3-pointer with 15 seconds left cut the Rockets lead to 89-84 entering the fourth quarter. The Mavericks were up by 19 points with less than two minutes left in the first quarter after a long 3-pointer by Carter and thanks in large part to a 16-point quarter by Mayo. Houston used a 35-15 run after that to erase the deficit and take a 55-54 lead four minutes before halftime. Harden scored 17 points and Houston hit five 3-pointers in that stretch. Harden had two of them, and he waved three fingers to the crowd while running down the court after the second one. The Rockets shot 70 per cent and scored a season-high 42 points in the second quarter to just 40.9 per cent shooting by the Mavericks to lead 66-63 at halftime. NOTES: Houstons 42 second-quarter points marked the first time the Rockets have scored 40 points in a quarter since Dec. 31, 2010, against Toronto. ... Mayo has scored at least 20 points 11 times this season. ... ' ' '
