MONTREAL - Kyle Quinlan will have the chance to help the McMaster Marauders defend their Vanier Cup title. The six-foot-three, 215-pound quarterback was among 14 players released Thursday by the Montreal Alouettes. That will allow the 23-year-old native of South Woodslee, Ont., to return to McMaster this fall. Quinlan made one appearance with Montreal during the exhibition season, being the last of four Alouettes quarterbacks to play in a 25-20 road loss to Toronto on Tuesday. Quinlan finished 2-of-4 passing for 45 yards, with 41 yards coming on a completion to Felton Huggins. Also released was Kyle Graves, a native of Barrie, Ont., who played quarterback at Acadia and like Quinlan can return to school this fall. Both Canadians were longshots to crack a Montreal roster that features two established veterans atop the quarterback depth chart with Anthony Calvillo and Adrian McPherson. Quinlan was instrumental in leading McMaster to its first Vanier Cup title last season. Despite serving a three-game suspension for an off-field incident, he completed 65 per cent of his passes during the regular season with 13 touchdowns and just two interceptions. In the playoffs, he was named MVP in the Yates Cup, Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup. Quinlan capped his season in style, leading McMaster to a thrilling 41-38 double-overtime Vanier Cup win over Laval. He finished 36-of-55 passing for 482 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a team-high 106 yards. Quinlan participated in the CFL evaluation camp in March but was bypassed in the leagues draft. But the disappointment of not being selected quickly turned to jubilation when the Alouettes came calling. Among the other players released was receiver Travon Patterson, who had a 12-yard touchdown catch against Toronto. CFL teams have until the weekend to reduce their training-camp rosters down to 46 players. Montreal will kick off the 2012 season in Calgary on July 1. If Toronto has any hope at all of challenging for a spot in the postseason, they must, in very short order, become a far superior defensive team to the one that took the ice a year ago. Nicknamed "Miku," Fedor struck in the 63rd and 71st minutes as Getafe scored five goals in a game for the first time this season. Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo scored from a spectacular overhead kick to give the visitors a 19th-minute lead, but Miguel Torres equalized in the 35th. Roman Wick and Tim Ramholt each had two goals for Switzerland (2-1), while Kevin Romy and Ryan Gardner also scored.LONDON -- Theo Walcott hit a hat trick as Arsenal scored six second-half goals on Saturday to thrash Newcastle 7-3 and record its fourth straight win in the Premier League. Walcott played in his preferred central striking role and showed why Arsenal is eager to retain him when his contract expires in the off-season, completing the scoring in the 90th minute with an impudent chip after a dribbling run that eluded several defenders. "My desire is to extend his contract," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "I think he belongs here. Hopefully we can do it. I think he loves the club and the club loves him and the reciprocity in love is the most difficult to find." Substitute Olivier Giroud scored a double, while Lukasz Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also found the net for Arsenal at Emirates Stadium. Demba Ba was on target twice for Newcastle, with Sylvain Marveaux also scoring. It equaled the second highest-scoring game in Premier League history, behind Portsmouths 7-4 victory over Reading in 2007. Arsenal is in fifth place but has a game in hand. Newcastle is 15th, three points above the relegation zone. Thierry Henry was in the stands and he was onn his feet after 20 minutes when Walcott made a break from the halfway line that was reminiscent of Arsenals record scorer and capped his run with an adroit low finish inside the side netting.dddddddddddd Newcastle pulled level through Ba but Oxlade-Chamberlain scored, only for Ba to grab his second to make it 2-2. Marveaux equalized Podolskis header, but Walcott put the Gunners 4-3 up before setting up Giroud twice and finishing the scoring with his chip. "Today just typifies what I think he can do through the middle," Wenger said of Walcott. "The first goal was a Thierry Henry-type goal and he showed great determination with the third. He has become a good finisher. He has learned a lot because he is an intelligent player and because he is intelligent he will continue to improve." Walcott has scored four goals and won one decisive penalty in the three games he has started up front, and he now has 14 for the season. Newcastle finished the year by scoring three times at both Old Trafford and Emirates Stadium but losing both games. "I thought when we got back to 3-3 we should have shut up shop," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said. ' ' '
