CHICAGO -- The Los Angeles Angels finally won a battle of the bullpens. Albert Pujols homered again and Howie Kendrick hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning Saturday night that sent the Angels to a 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Alberto Callaspo doubled off Matt Thornton (4-7) with two outs in the 10th and scored on Kendricks single. The Angels bullpen had taken the loss in three consecutive games, but outdueled Chicagos bullpen to break the Angels three-game losing streak. "Hopefully were going to build from this and get a little more confidence in our bullpen," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Pujols 24th home run was his sixth in his last five games. Mike Trout continued his torrid season. He singled twice, scored two runs and scaled the wall in left-centre field to rob Gordon Beckham of a home run in the second inning. "I told him in the one at-bat, Im like Youre really good, man, because he does it all," said White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski. "He makes those catches in the outfield look so good. He hits for power, he can run as fast as anyone Ive seen in a long time. "He plays the game right, plays the game hard, has a smile on his face. The Angels are lucky to have him and hes one of the best Ive seen in a long time." Kevin Jepsen (2-1) worked a scoreless ninth. Ernesto Frieri pitched the 10th for his 13th save in 14 chances. "Out of the bullpen, one of the tough things is youre not really allowed to make any mistakes because a mistake changes the game," Jepsen said. "You put one pitch where you dont want to and you lose the game. The blame comes on us and thats the way it is and thats the way we like. Weve always had confidence and weve never lost it." Kevin Youkilis homered twice for the White Sox, logging his first multihomer game since Sept. 28, 2009, and the 10th of his career. A.J. Pierzynski added a solo shot for the AL Central leaders. Pujols put the Angels ahead 5-3 with his solo homer in the seventh. Youkilis hit a tying, two-run shot off LaTroy Hawkins in the bottom half. Youkilis also hit a solo homer in the first. Pierzynski homered in his fourth straight game, matching a career best. He extended a career high with his 20th home run. Pujols got into it with umpire crew Chief Dana DeMuth in the first after Pierzynskis foul pop down the first base line was knocked away by a fan. DeMuth ruled that the ball was in the stands and the fan was free to go for the ball, prompting a visit from Scioscia. Pierzynski later popped out to strand runners on first and second. Scioscia also took issue with the umpires in Friday nights 8-6 loss when the Angels filed a protest after a baserunning call went against them. Angels starter Ervin Santana allowed three runs--two earned--in six innings. He lowered his ERA to 5.83 in his second consecutive satisfactory start after his turn in the rotation was skipped in late July. "Ervin looked solid," Scioscia said. "Better fastball, better breaking ball in good spots." Gavin Floyd bounced back from a 41-pitch, three-run first inning to work deep into the game. He was chased by Pujols seventh-inning homer. The 1-5 Bombers are looking to new quarterback Joey Elliott to secure just their second win of the season. "The message has been sent, we have to pick it up," said veteran Winnipeg offensive lineman Glenn January.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Bart Scott has pushed himself for weeks, trying to tough out a painful toe injury. This week, though, the New York Jets linebacker might have to sit this one out. Scotts streak of playing in 119 straight games could end Sunday because of a hyperextended big toe that has ailed him since the third game of the season. He missed his second day of practice Thursday after he played just nine defensive snaps against the New England Patriots last Sunday. "Ive always prided myself on being able to have a high tolerance to play through things," Scott said. "I just want to show my teammates that Im willing to bite down and continue to play and do what I can to help us win. If we have to shut it down, we shut it down. If not, then well be ready to go." Scott injured the big toe on his right foot on the second defensive play against Miami on Sept. 23, and described it as "turf toe, ligament damage, capsule strains and things like that." Coach Rex Ryan and defensive co-ordinator Mike Pettine both said that its an injury that normally sidelines a player for three or four weeks. Instead, Scott has tried to stay on the field by wearing a stiff cleat that is a size 13 1/2 instead of his usual 12. The top of the shoe was cut off and a carbon fiber top installed to helpp protect the toe, along with foam.dddddddddddd "Its tough. Its like losing a thumb on your hand," Scott said. "Everything you do comes off your big toe." It has affected his ability to run in space, which hasnt been as much of an issue against recent opponents that run the ball a lot. He was replaced mostly last week by rookie Demario Davis, a speedy linebacker who could be in line to eventually replace Scott as the starter. Scotts impressive run dates to 2004 with the Baltimore Ravens, and ranks as the fifth-longest streak among active NFL linebackers. "Bart has been a warrior for us for a long time," Pettine said. The Jets will continue to evaluate Scott to see if he might be able to play against Miami. The injury hasnt necessarily gotten worse, Scott said, but it also hasnt gotten much better. With a bye-week break coming up after Sunday, an extended rest now might help Scott for later in the season. "I dont care about a streak," Scott said. "I care about helping my team win and trying to win a championship. Thats always been my primary goal, and thats why I came here. If helping the team best is for me to be on the sideline and help these young linebackers see whats going on and help slow the game down for them, then Ill do that." ' ' '
