The Phoenix Coyotes staved off elimination, avoiding a sweep, with a 2-0 win over the Kings in Game Four at Los Angeles. Phoenix managed to win despite being outshot 36-21 in the game, the eighth time in this years playoffs that the Coyotes have been outshot by at least 15 shots in a game; they have a 4-4 record in those games. The reason that Phoenix manages to survive while getting outshot by such a margin is the play of goaltender Mike Smith, who has recorded at least 35 saves in nine of 15 playoff games. If the Coyotes are to have any hope in this series, they need a superhuman effort from Smith but, considering the Kings ability to get under his skin early in the series, it still seems unlikely that Smith can lead a rally for a team getting so dominated in the possession game. Phoenix got both their goals from captain Shane Doan, his first goals of the series and the first goal was assisted by Ray Whitney, his first point of the series, ending a six-game scoreless drought. Doan also tied defenceman Derek Morris for the Coyotes team lead with five hits. While the Kings number one line of Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams dominated territorial play, the combined for a total of seven shots on goal, so a certain amount of credit is due to Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Michal Rozsival, the defence pairing that ended up against that trio most often (per www.timeonice.com). Trevor Lewis continued to be a factor in moderate ice time (13:32), tying Drew Doughty with a game-high five shots on goal and leading the Kings with five hits. Lewis has been an unheralded contributor to the Kings in this playoff run. He scored seven points in 72 regular season games and has six points in 13 playoff games, working on a terrific third line with Jarret Stoll and Dwight King. So, while the Coyotes have to be encouraged that they are heading home for another game, there is little reason to get optimistic about a miracle comeback because the Kings are just controlling too much of the play. If the Coyotes can change that fundamental difference, then there might be some reason for hope, but were not there yet. What had changed from one week to the next? Or is that the Ticats defence is just that average at stopping the run? The left-winger had been in the Czech Republic to mourn the death of his father.JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Tiger Woods wasnt the only star to miss the cut at the PGA Championship on Friday, just the biggest. Masters winners, U.S. Open stalwarts, British Open champions and Ryder Cup heroes were all heading for the exit after two long, hot days at Atlanta Athletic Club. Seven of the past 11 major winners are gone after failing to reach the 4-over cut. Gather 100 of the worlds top 102 golfers for a tournament and even some of the sports major stars wont measure up. The wreckage included 2009 British winner Stewart Cink, who was especially down about heading home since its only a short drive to Duluth. "Just really quite difficult to say, you know, when you play a major right here in your backyard and you have high hopes to come out here and do this," Cink said after his second-round 8-over 78. "Embarrassing and just unpleasant." Hes got plenty of stellar company in the underachievers club. Defending PGA winner Martin Kaymer is out, along with last years hard-luck loser Dustin Johnson -- denied a spot in the playoff because he grounded his club in a ragged patch of dirt that was turned out to be a bunker after driving far right of the fairway. "Overall, it was a frustrating tournament because nothing went my way," said Kaymer, who finished at 5-over. Angel Cabrera, the Masters champ two years ago, came up short at Bobby Jones home club. Darren Clarke came here off a victory at the British last month, holding off Johnson over Royal St. Georges. But Clarke was gone by tea time after rounds of 78-76 on the par-70 layout. "Im just going away," Clarke said. "I need a rest. Im tired." There were several claret jugs winners who probably felt the same way.dddddddddddd. Besides Cink and Clarke, 2010 champ Louis Oosthuizen and 2002 winner Ernie Els arent sticking around for the weekend. Cink and Els, who also has two U.S. Open titles, missed cuts at a major for the third time this season. Other U.S. Open winners to fall included 06 champion Geoff Ogilvy, 09 winner Lucas Glover and his successor, Graeme McDowell. McDowell was also a Ryder Cup star, clinching the winning point for Europe. None of that helped at the PGA, where he shot 12-over 152. "The game is just kicking me right now," he said. "But, you kick on." Maybe two-time U.S. Open champ Retief Goosen had the right idea, withdrawing before Fridays second round began. Several PGA Tour standouts also didnt measure up. Three-time tour winner Anthony Kim and rising Australian Jason Day, second at the Masters and U.S. Open this year, were among those at 5-over. It appeared that group would also include Paul Casey until a gutsy approach from a fairway bunker saved par on the difficult 18th hole and kept him in the field at 4-over par. Brandt Snedeker didnt turn in the strong performance he needed in order to stick around after an opening round 74. It probably didnt help when he was assessed a two-stroke penalty for showing up late to his tee time. He finished with a 73 for a 7-over 147. Cink said those who want to blame the 7,467-yard layout -- the longest for a par-70 course in major championship history -- should instead look at their games as he did. "It just punished me today and I deserved it," he said. ' ' '
