SAN FRANCISCO -- Madison Bumgarners teammates had something special for him -- a shower of beer and shaving cream, a celebration for his first career complete game and shutout. He was also one pitch away from something even more memorable. Bumgarner pitched a one-hitter, allowing only Ryan Hanigans solid single leading off the sixth inning, as the Giants threw their franchise-record fourth straight shutout and beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 Thursday night. "Its nice to get a complete-game shutout," Bumgarner said. "But four straight shutouts? Thats awesome." Bumgarner (10-4) struck out eight and walked two in winning his fifth straight decision. San Francisco moved alone into the NL West lead for the first time this year. "By the numbers, its the best game Ive thrown," Bumgarner said. "But Ive felt better and gotten beaten up pretty bad. Thats the way this game goes." The Giants became the 17th team to have four or more consecutive shutouts since 1918. The Baltimore Orioles did it most recently, with five straight in 1995. "Ive seen a lot of things in this game but Ive never seen that before," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Its been an impressive run. Thats hard to do." Angel Pagan, Pablo Sandoval, Gregor Blanco and Ryan Theriot each drove in a runs for the Giants, who have won four straight and six of seven to move into first place in the NL West for the first time since last Aug. 9. Melky Cabrera had two hits and reached base four times. "Its exciting stuff," Sandoval said. "When they are throwing like that its fun to play defence. You want to make the plays." Johnny Cueto (9-4) had his four-game winning streak halted. He allowed two earned runs and six hits in six innings. "You just hate for Johnny to lose like that," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It was a situation where he just got outpitched. On most occasions you give up two or three runs, you got a pretty good chance to win the game." Bumgarner faced two over the minimum as Giants pitchers extended their scoreless streak to a San Francisco-record 36 innings. He walked Drew Stubbs in the first, and then retired eight straight before walking him again in the fourth. Stubbs was caught stealing, and Bumgarner retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced. "Hes dealing," Hanigan said. "Im glad I got one. He earned it. Hes made adjustments, at least from last year to this year, in terms of how hes throwing." Bumgarner had allowed 13 runs in his first 13 2-3 innings against the Reds, losing twice. "I was just trying to keep us in there," Bumgarner said. "It worked out." The Giants scored twice with two outs in the first. Cabrera walked and Buster Posey singled ahead of Pagans RBI single. Posey came around to score on a throwing error by Jay Bruce. Sandoval doubled home a run in the sixth and Blanco tripled home a run in the seventh. Theriot followed Blancos hit with a single. In a volatile end to the match at Citys Etihad Stadium in which Robin Van Persie clinched a 3-2 win for United, Ferdinand was left bleeding from a cut above his left eye after being struck by an object. "Whoever threw that coin, what a shot!" Ferdinand wrote on Twitter. City said the club will assist the police with its investigation into "the throwing of missiles" and trouble between both sets of fans. "Manchester City wishes to offer its sincere apologies to Rio Ferdinand," City said in a statement. "The club unreservedly condemns the actions which led to his being injured." A City fan also ran toward Ferdinand, but fell and was then obstructed by City goalkeeper Joe Hart, who pushed him away. The supporter was led away from the pitch by stewards. "Respect to Joe Hart for protecting that idiot who ran on!! Love the banter between fans but there is a point when it goes too far...calm it!" Ferdinand added on Twitter. City said it will supply video footage and eyewitness accounts to officers to help identify the perpetrators, and then "apply its own disciplinary policies for any fans found guilty of offences." The English Foootball Association launched its own investigation into the attack on Ferdinand, and called for the guilty fans to be banned from football for life.dddddddddddd "It is simply unacceptable that any player is exposed to injury in this way," the FA said in a statement. "To witness Rio Ferdinand leaving the field with a cut above his eye to receive treatment is appalling. "Football in this country has made great progress over recent decades. However, we must maintain the safety and security inside of our stadia and to do this we need to isolate and identify any individuals guilty of offences with strong penalties to act as a deterrent to others." The Greater Manchester Police Twitter feed later received notification of racist comments directed at Ferdinand on the social networking site. "Thank you to everyone reporting racist tweets," the force tweeted. "We are aware and are investigating." Police are also investigating chants during the game after announcing that a man was "arrested inside stadium on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence after officers hear racist chanting." Man City said it wasnt aware who the fan supported. The alleged racism happened a day after a Swansea supporter was arrested at another topflight game for supposedly making a racist gesture toward Norwich defender Sebastien Bassong. ' ' '
