The NHLs war on concussions started off thunderously in 2011 with new disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan doling out suspensions at will in the preseason. The message from the new sheriff was clear: headshots will not be tolerated. But in just the third month of the season, the list of players now sidelined with concussions or concussion-like symptoms reads out like an all-star ballot. Sidney Crosby (the leagues best player), Claude Giroux (the NHLs leading point scorer), Milan Michalek (the NHLs leading goal scorer), Chris Pronger and Kris Letang are just a few of the names out of the picture due to incidental or intentional contact with the head. While Crosbys case pre-dates Shanahans authority, the rest represent a large swath of the leagues marquee talent (as well as chunk out of the leagues scoring leaders) at a time when the league has promised a change in how it deals with head injuries. Agent Allan Walsh, who represents Michalek, said this week the issue has become an "epidemic" and called on the league to do more to address it. "Clearly, the NHL is in the throes of a concussion epidemic," Walsh said. "Only time will tell how severe the long-term health ramifications will be for concussed NHL players. With the economic incentive to make NHL hockey more exciting, the league worked diligently to increase the speed of the game. With increased speed necessarily comes increased collision. The results as it relates to player safety are self evident." And NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly offered his own rebuttal. "For people to suggest that the last seven to 10 days and the experience weve had and some of the names that are out should somehow materially alter our approach to this issue is ridiculous," he said. So heres Daves question to you: "Has the NHL done all it can do to prevent concussions?" Here are some of the best responses: "With all the rule changes to speed up the game, the NHL designed its own problems. Clutch and grab doesnt look so bad now, does it?" - Chris "What else can be done? Players are penalized on the ice, suspended off the ice, and concussion awareness and information is better than ever." - Eric "Its hard to prevent collisions involving teammates, so whatever else is done, there will still be concussions." - Al "To quote The Simpsons: "Weve tried nothing, and were fresh out of ideas." - Brian (Thats not fair, but its The Simpsons). "Both the league and the players need to ensure that helmets are worn and secured properly." - Ben "The NHL may not be doing all it could do, but within the framework of a game designed for fun and profit, it is doing all it should do." - Matthew "A stone still unturned is to increase the size of the ice surface." – J.J. Daves reply to all: The answer to this question is and will be "no" until the NHL tries to eliminate head injuries caused by flying fists. It can do everything else in its power, but its not doing all it can do until it does that. And because it doesnt do that, it gets less credit for the things it is doing. And it might get more credit if it said things differently. "Upper-body injury" is evasive at best and offensive at worst if it is meant to avoid the report of a concussion. And what to make of the theory that the number of concussions is up because they are more frequently diagnosed, when Commissioner Gary Bettman tells the board of governors that concussions are down by 1/3? Take your pick, but either way, it amounts to spin. And then theres Dale Hunters view. The Washington coach says concussions go in streaks--it seems like a lot now, but itll even out...he thinks. You know, its okay to call it a crisis; its better than hoping for the end of a streak. cheapnfljerseysforsale . -- The Minnesota Vikings have activated running back Adrian Peterson from the physically unable to perform list Sunday, with coach Leslie Frazier saying Peterson had done everything in his rehab that could be done working by himself. wholesale nfl jerseys .
