It was a fantastic weekend for the Blue Jays, considering they lost three starting pitchers to injuries over a four-game span last week, yet they still managed to bounce back and sweep the Phillies at Rogers Centre. Kyle Drabek and Drew Hutchison will find out in the next day or so if theyre going to need "Tommy John" surgery to repair their right elbows while Brandon Morrow is likely out for up to two months while he rehabs his strained left oblique muscle. The starting rotation is in a state of flux right now. Jesse Chavez, Carlos Villanueva, Aaron Laffey, Joel Carreno and even Canadian Scott Richmond are candidates to join the rotation for the two openings Tuesday and Wednesday at Milwaukee. Robert Coello could be in the mix as well. Brett Cecil wasnt overwhelming, however, he did well enough over his stint Sunday to earn another start this Saturday at Miami against Marlins. There is always the chance Alex Anthopolous could deal for another pitcher or add a journeyman free agent but as weve documented over earlier columns, those type of moves dont usually happen until July. Speaking of trades, I decided to go over all the swaps Peter Bavasi, Pat Gillick, Gord Ash, J.P. Ricciardi and Alex Anthopoulos have made over the years and picked out my personal bests decade by decade. - December 5th, 1978: The Jays dealt their one-year wonder of a closer Victor Cruz to Cleveland for Phil Lansford and a young shortstop prospect by the name of Alfredo Griffin. Alfredo not only won a share of the Rookie of the Year award for the following season, he returned to the Jays as a utility player for their World Series seasons of 92-93. - December 9,1982: The Blue Jays pulled off a five-player swap with the Yankees. The Jays gave up two men including closer Dale Murray. In return, they received Dave Collins, right hander Mike Morgan, and a young 1st base prospect Fred McGriff, who could still make a good case for being in the Hall of Fame. In the 90s, there were a couple of no-brainers. - December 2, 1990: The Jays landed Devon White, the best fielding centre fielder theyve ever had in a six-player swap with the Angels. The key player going the other way was Junior Felix. - December 5, 1990: Gillick dealt Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez to San Diego for Joe Carter and the greatest Blue Jays of them all, Roberto Alomar. You could argue about a few deals being the best in the first decade of this century. Perhaps this is a bit premature especially since hes hurt now. But acquiring Brandon Morrow on December 27, 2009 for Brandon League and a prospect looks pretty good in my books. So far this decade, Anthopolous getting Brett Lawrie from Milwaukee for Shaun Marcum ranks as the best. However, the Colby Rasmus deal with St. Louis looks pretty good as well. What about the worst deals the Jays have ever made? Some would say giving up Jeff Kent in 1992 as part of the David Cone deal but the Jays got a World Series out of that one and Cone was so impressed with his first stint with the Jays, he had no trouble coming back again in 1995. If this one wasnt the worst, it is certainly the most frustrating in my mind. On July 19, 2000, with the Jays very much in the race, they tried to shore up their rotation by picking up right hander Esteban Loaiza from Texas for Michael Young and pitcher Darwin Cubillan. Loaiza went 5-7 that season with the Jays and 25-28 overall over the better part of three seasons. After the Jays let him walk as a free agent, Loaiza signing with the White Sox for about $600,000 and proceeded to have the season of his life, going 21-9 and a 2.90 ERA. Had he done that in 2000, the Jays might have made the post-season. Another one that bothered me was the Jays shipping right hander Peter Vukovich to St. Louis in December of 1977, along with outfielder John Scott for Victor Cruz and Tommy Underwood. Vuke was a fiery swingman with the Jays in 1977, who just hated to lose. In 1982 with Milwaukee, he had established himself as a starter going 18-6, winning the National League Cy Young award and getting to the World Series against his previous club, the Cardinals who ultimately won the Fall Classic. And oh, I almost forgot, in the best trade ever category, the Jays swapped a catching prospect named Robinson Diaz to Pittsburgh on August 21, 2008 for a fringe prospect who couldnt seem to find a home, named Jose Bautista. Liverpools qualification hopes took a dive by losing 1-0 at wealthy Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in Group A while Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani produced the best individual performance of the round, scoring all four of Napolis goals in a 4-2 win over Dnipro to revive the Italian teams challenge in Group F. Inter joined Rubin Kazan in progressing from Group H with two games to spare by easing past Partizan Belgrade 3-1 and Lyon ensured a top-two finish in Group I by winning 3-2 at last seasons beaten finalist Athletic Bilbao, which slumped to a third defeat in four matches. Bayer Leverkusen, Metalist Kharkiv and Hannover were the other sides to go through courtesy of victories but Atletico surprisingly lost 2-0 at Academica in Group B, for the Portuguese teams first win in Europe in 43 years. England striker Jermain Defoe grabbed a clinical hat trick in Tottenhams 3-1 win at home to Maribor that leaves the English side second in Group J, behind Lazio after its 3-0 victory over Panathinaikos. Five teams -- Rosenborg, Rapid Vienna, Neftchi, Partizan Belgrade and Hapoel Tel-Aviv -- were eliminated in the 48-club group stage, which resumes in two weeks time. The top two teams in each group go through, where they will be joined by the eight third-place finishers in the Champions League groups. Inter travelled to Partizan buoyed by a 3-1 win at Juventus, which ended the Serie A leaders 49-match unbeaten run in the league, and picked up where it left off. Rodrigo Palacio scored twice and Fredy Guarin added Inters third in Belgrade. Rubin beat Neftchi 1-0 to also move to 10 points and will host Inter next, a match that should determine who finishes top of the group. Lyon is the only team to have won all four of its group games after goals by Bafetimbi Gomis, Yoann Gourcuff and Alexandre Lacazette against Bilbao, which is a shadow of the side that flamboyantly swept to the final in May -- only to lose to Spanish rival Atletico. The Basques are bottom on one point and now have to win both remaining games to have a chance of qualifying. Leverkusen and Metalist advanced from Group K after moving to 10 points with wins over Rapid Vienna (3-0) and Rosenborg (3-1), respectively. Group L leader Hannover cant be denied a top-two place either, following a 90th-minute winner from the penalty spot by Szabolccs Huszti in a 3-2 victory over Helsingborg, which had two players dismissed in the final two minutes.dddddddddddd Lacina Traore grabbed a 45th-minute winner for Anzhi to give Dutch coach Guus Hiddink the perfect present on his 66th birthday in Moscow against Liverpool. The English visitors, who again played a largely reserve team, held their own throughout but was undone by a great piece of skill by the lanky Ivorian striker, who lifted the ball over his marker before lobbing goalkeeper Brad Jones from outside the area. "Some of the young players were terrific and we are disappointed not to have got something from it," said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who left Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard out of the squad ahead of Sundays match at Chelsea in the Premier League. Anzhi climbed above Liverpool to the top of the group and with Young Boys surprise 3-2 victory over Udinese, all four teams can still reach the knockout stage. Liverpool and Anzhi can both qualify from what is proving to be the toughest of all 12 groups by beating Young Boys and Udinese, respectively, next time out. Atletico should also go through in the next matchday as it hosts Hapoel but was sunk on Thursday by a brace from Wilson Eduardo, earning Academica a first European victory since 1969. The holders, who were without their star striker Radamel Falcao, are level on points with Viktoria Plzen -- a 4-0 winner over eliminated Hapoel Tel Aviv. Newcastle stayed top of Group D by drawing 2-2 at Club Brugge while Fenerbahce and Steaua Bucharest are both five points clear in their groups after a third win in four games but still arent guaranteed to advance. Fenerbahce beat AEL Limassol 2-0 in Group C, where Marseille drew 2-2 with Borussia Moenchengladbach to leave both teams on five points, and Steaua is in charge of Group E after defeating Molde 2-1 away. Defoe was in irresistible mood against Maribor, providing three deadly finishes -- two coming from assists from flying winger Gareth Bale -- at White Hart Lane. At halftime, a tearful Fabrice Muamba was given a standing ovation from the crowd after returning to the exact spot on the field where he collapsed because of cardiac arrest during an FAIt was a fantastic weekend for the Blue Jays, considering they lost three starting pitchers to injuries over a four-game span last week, yet they still managed to bounce back and sweep the Phillies at Rogers Centre.
