ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Giants running game has nowhere to go but up in 2012. While New York won the Super Bowl, it did it with Eli Mannings arm and a surging, swarming defence. The running game, once the focal point of the offence in Giants lore, was an embarrassment last season, averaging just 89.2 yards. That was last in the NFL. Starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw said the ranking was "devastating" and took some of the joy out of winning the league title for the second time in five seasons. "Thats a tough thing as a running back, actually being the starter and being a big part of it," Bradshaw said Friday before the Giants held their first practice of the training camp at the University at Albany. "Weve got to look forward to this year and doing a whole lot better up front, all together as an offence. I think itll come." The Giants have issues. Starting right tackle Kareem McKenzie was not re-signed and left tackle Will Beatty, who missed the second half of last season with an eye injury, is battling sciatica in his back and is limited for the start of camp. With Brandon Jacobs playing in San Francisco, the job as the No. 2 running back is open. Still, the potential is there. If the line can come together and Bradshaw, who has battled foot injuries throughout his career, can stay healthy, the offence has a chance to be explosive when Eli Manning and receiver Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks are added to the mix. Coach Tom Coughlin believes the running game will improve, despite having less time to devote to it because of the current practice rules under the collective bargaining agreement reached last year. "We rushed it down the stretch -- and in the six (playoff) games at the end of the year -- better than we did throughout the whole year, but we didnt have the big plays," Coughlin said. "The balance factor is always something that weve been able to count on. "Weve got to get back to that." The biggest change on the offensive line will be moving David Diehl to right tackle. He started the season at left guard and moved to left tackle after Beatty was hurt after 10 games. Diehl isnt concern about moving to the right side. Throughout his 10-year career with New York, he has started at every position on the offensive line other than centre. Its just a matter of practicing. He is more concerned with re-establishing the running game, which was tops in the league when the Giants won the Super Bowl after the 2007 season. "Thats a huge thing for us is to get the run game back going, get it back to the top of the league because thats a standard that we set around here," Diehl said. "Its important to an offence, especially with the weapons we have. If we can get that balance together, there is no telling how good our offence can be." In its defence, the offensive line was beset with injuries last season. New centre David Baas was bothered by a neck injury early in the season. Beatty tweaked his back before suffering a detached retina in a game against the Eagles. Diehl played the last two months of the season with a broken hand, while right guard Chris Snee struggled at time and was forced to have minor elbow surgery after last season. "You can say there are guys moving around and different things like that, but you never make any excuses for anything," Diehl said. "I know as a group we are making a collective effort to make it (the running game) a strength. Like I said, the guys we have in our huddle and the guys we have outside, the guy we have at quarterback, if we get the running game back, our offence is definitely going to be one of the top in the league." The running game should also benefit with the addition of rookie David Wilson, the Virginia Tech product who has big-play potential every time he touches the ball. "His speed is just tremendous," Bradshaw said. "He can open up a whole lot of things for our whole offence -- outside, inside. Hes an all-around back, a quality back. I think he can execute everything." The problem will be getting the running game going in time for the start of the season Sept. 5 against Dallas. Coughlin said in the old days, he could concentrate a long portion of practice to working on the running game and cover other things in the afternoon workout. However, two-a-day workouts are a thing of the past under the new collective bargaining agreement. "We didnt rush the ball well," Coughlin said. "Weve got to get that straightened out. We have our work cut out for us. No doubt there." John Carlson USA Jersey . Foster, the NFLs leading rusher in 2010, has a sore knee and Reed has a sore hip. Foster, who sat out last years opener with a left hamstring injury, says his knee just needed rest. He wouldnt specify which knee was hurt. However, the Edmonton Oilers general manager sounds like a man who is intent on making the first selection at the draft in Pittsburgh later this month. A victory by Dallas, though, would keep the Western Conference playoff picture as cloudy as ever. The Stars play host to the Sharks this evening three days after getting shut out by San Jose and falling out of a playoff spot. San Joses 3-0 home win over Dallas on Saturday put the Sharks in the eighth spot in the West with 90 points, one ahead of the Stars with three games left to play. Both clubs are also in contention for the Pacific Division title, currently led by the Los Angeles Kings 93 points. Phoenix sits seventh in the West with 91 points. The Sharks got 22 saves from Antti Niemi, as the netminder earned his sixth shutout of the season and 19th of his career. Joe Pavelski scored twice to give him a career-high and team-leading 31 goals, while Jason Demers also lit the lamp. San Jose snapped a two-game slide and moved to 7-4-1 in its past 12. "Everyone knew the importance of the game and it was exciting to have the crowd in it like a playoff game because thats what it was," said Pavelski. The Sharks, who end their season with a home-and-home series against the Kings that begins on Thursday in Los Angeles, outscored the Stars 13-4 in winning all three home games versus Dallas this year and is 6-0-1 in the past seven encounters overall. Captain Joe Thornton has been a big part of that success. The Sharks center had two assists in Saturdays win, giving him a goal and 10 helpers in the five meetings this season. Patrick Marleau has six points in the five encounters, while Pavelski has talllied four goals.dddddddddddd San Jose had won its past three in Dallas before a 4-3 shootout loss there on March 8. Tomas Vincour tied the game late in the third for the Stars and then had the only goal of the shootout on Niemi. Kari Lehtonen made 45 saves and another five in the shootout in that win, but was touched for three goals on 34 shots on Saturday. Dallas ended a four-game road trip 1-3 and lost for the sixth time in nine games. "We have got to move on. We have got a big game against this team on Tuesday and our fate is in our own hands still," Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan said. With Dallas falling to 1-11-2 in the back end of playing on consecutive days, captain Brenden Morrow called tonights meeting a must win. That is very true given that Dallas would clinch a playoff spot if it wins out and at least the Stars wont play on consecutive nights for the remainder of the regular season. "Every team does it," Morrow said of playing back-to-back games. "It was a big game. I dont think fatigue can be an excuse for when you have whats on the line that we had tonight. Our back-to-back record hasnt been very good, but it hasnt been as meaningful as what tonights game was in the past." Dallas ends its season against two playoff-bound clubs, visiting Nashville on Thursday before hosting St. Louis on Saturday. The Stars played without Radek Dvorak for a fourth straight game due to a sprained ankle and a third in a row minus Eric Nystrom because of a lacerated leg. Tom Wandell also missed his second consecutive game because of illness and all three forwards are questionable for tonight. ' ' '
