MONTREAL -- Patrice Bernier knew exactly what he was going to do as he set up for a late penalty kick. Bernier scored in the 89th minute and the Montreal Impact ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew on Sunday night. Bernier, who wore the captains armband with Davy Arnaud out of the lineup, hesitated before putting his shot past Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum to the delight of the Saputo Stadium crowd of 15,118. "Thats what I usually do all the time," said Bernier, who scored his fifth goal. "It works, so Im not going to stop." Bernier had scored the Impacts only goal over the course of their losing streak in Wednesday nights 3-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City. Montreal was outscored 9-1 during the skid. Zarek Valentin drew the Impact even with the tying goal in the 78th minute. Valentin scored on a 15-metre shot from the right side to draw the Impact even 14 minutes after Columbus took a 1-0 lead. "Were very happy because we finally won," said Impact striker Marco Di Vaio, who claimed his first win since making his Major League Soccer debut in a 3-0 loss to Toronto on June 27. Milan Mirosevic broke the scoreless draw 64 minutes in. The Crew striker cut across to head in Nemanja Vukovichs left-footed corner kick off Montreal goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts hand and into the right side of the net. Di Vaio began Valentins scoring play, setting up Sanna Nyassi who fed the pass to his right to Valentin. His shot beat Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum into the right side of the net. "Thats frustrating," Crew defender Josh Williams said. "We got the goal, we started to settle down a little bit and knock the ball but we got a little impatient. Theyre a good team at home so a few mistakes here and there and it cost us at the end." Gruenebaum made a diving save on Jeb Brovskys long kick in the 76th minute. "Oh man, from my view I thought it was going in," Brovsky said. "Hes a very good keeper and give him credit, that was a great save." Lamar Neagle headed the ball just wide of the left post off Di Vaios deft setup early in the second half. The veteran Italian striker created the scoring opportunity 49 minutes in when he floated a pass to Neagle over Williams. Di Vaio created another chance moments later when he sent in Nyassi, whose shot was blocked by Gruenebaum. "Yeah, hes a good player," said Williams. "Hes not too fast but hes crafty and he plays good angles. Hes a pretty physical guy. You gain a lot of experience playing against a guy with that much national team experience. Hes scored a lot of big goals for Italy and everything. Hes a creative player its always good to match up and defend against guys like that." Crew captain Chad Marshall returned after missing eight games because of a concussion. Columbus won four and lost three without Marshall, who had not played since he was hit on the head by a ball in practice on May 4. The Impact were without Arnaud and midfielder Felipe Martins. Both players served one-game suspensions after each received his fifth yellow card of the season Wednesday night. Nyassi will be suspended for Montreals next game, Saturday in Philadelphia. Nyassi was shown his fifth yellow card of the season for a hard tackle late in the first half. Columbus midfielder Tony Tchani was shown a yellow card by referee Matthew Foerster in the 39th minute for kicking the ball into the stands. Coach Outlet . In seventh place in the Eastern Conference, the Impact will need to run the table in the four games left in their regular season and hope that the Houston Dynamo, who hold the fifth and final playoff spot, and the sixth-place Columbus Crew both falter down the stretch. Wray took over for Brodie Merrill who stepped down to an assistant while he and his wife wait for the arrival of their first child this summer. ATLANTA -- Jeff Teague only gets two chances to face Chris Paul each season, so he wants to make the most of his opportunities. It took Teague much of the first quarter to find his momentum against Paul, a fellow Wake Forest point guard. Once he did, the Atlanta Hawks were making stops on defence and scoring in transition. Teague had 19 points and 11 assists, Zaza Pachulia added 19 points and 12 rebounds, and the Hawks won their fifth straight game with a 104-93 victory over Los Angeles on Saturday night. The trick was to keep All-Star Paul on the perimeter and limit how many times he drove the lane for an easy basket or assist. "I dont know how we did it," Teague said. "Hes a great player. We just made plays and played defence -- team defence -- and tried to live with those guys making jump shots." Blake Griffin scored 22 points and Paul had 19 for the Clippers. Los Angeles has lost a season-high three consecutive games after winning six in a row. Lou Williams finished with 18 points and Josh Smith added 17 for Atlanta. One night after managing season lows in points and field-goal percentage in an 86-76 loss at Brooklyn, the Clippers shot just 42.7 per cent from the field. They began the game with the NBAs third-best shooting percentage, but ended a four-game road trip with just one victory. "Its a terrible road trip for us, especially with all of them begin winnable games," Paul said. "I think what weve learned from it is that its not as easy as it looks. Thats where you build your identity at -- on the road." The Clippers twice closed within six before halftime, the second time coming on Griffins dunk at the 1:20 mark, but Los Angeles was all but run out of Philips Arena in the third. After Willie Greens layup cut the lead to eight in the first 2 minutes of the third, the Clippers were outscored 18-4. Smith had a big highlight, catching Pachulias long pass up the court and dribbling past Griffin for a left-handed dunk that made it 68-50. Pachulia followed with two baskets, a 16-footer from the left baseline and a putback that gave the HHawks a 22-point lead with 4:06 left in the third.dddddddddddd "He was a warrior, he really was," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "He was very physical tonight. Zaza doesnt have much lift around the basket, but he just throws that body all over the place and somehow gets the shot off. He was really good for us." Atlanta never trailed after Teague hit a 17-footer that made it 26-24 early in the second, and Los Angeles poor shooting played a big role in its demise. Williams 20-footer ended a 16-0 run in the second quarter and gave the Hawks a 37-24 lead. "We fought our way back, made it a little bit of a game," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "At that point everythings got to go so perfect that it just puts too much pressure on you. Not a good performance overall for sure. The run that they made in the second quarter on our bench changed the tide." Teague, who improved to 2-3 against Paul, credited part of the victory with successfully defending the pick-and-roll and forcing Paul and Griffin to shoot more jump shots than they would like. Another goal was to challenge Paul and Griffin when the Hawks had the ball to wear down the Clippers two best offensive options. "Youve got to make those guys guard, too," Teague said. "If they can just play offence the whole game, theyre going to eat you alive, but if you go at them and make them guard, too, it will make them tired on the defensive end just as well." Notes: Hawks G Devin Harris missed the game with a sore big left toe. ... Saturday also marked the first time in Teagues three seasons that hes had consecutive double-doubles. He finished Fridays win at Charlotte with 13 points and 12 assists. ... Griffin was given a technical foul from the bench early in the fourth, only a couple of seconds after Clippers F Lamar Odum was called for his first personal foul. ... Atlantas bench outscored Los Angeles 20-0 in the first half. ... Clippers G Jamal Crawford added to his NBA career record with his 33rd four-point play, hitting a 3 and the ensuing free throw early in the fourth. ' ' '
