NEW YORK - David Price came off the field after the fifth inning, drenched with sweat after his confrontation with Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano. He got them both out with the bases loaded, and Rays manager Joe Maddon figured that was enough. Price struck out eight to become the AL leader in wins, and Tampa Bay beat the New York Yankees 7-3 on Thursday night to avert a three-game series sweep. "David was outstanding. He only threw five innings, but it was almost like he threw a complete game," Maddon said. "The at-bat with A-Rod. Curveball, curveball, curveball, curveball. Strike three was incredible. Just an outstanding performance." Price finished his night by retiring two of the Yankees most dangerous hitters in a high-pressure situation. Rodriguez returned to the dugout after an 11-pitch at-bat and Cano grounded out in six more, ending New Yorks best threat to cut into a four-run lead. CC Sabathia struck out 12 and matched a season high with 121 pitches for the Yankees, who lost for the fourth time in their last 14 games and went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position to lower their average in such situations to .218. The Yankees got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez singled in a run against Joel Peralta to make it 5-2, bringing up pinch-hitter Eric Chavez, who grounded out to first with two on. Russell Martin added a solo shot in the ninth for New York. Price (8-3) never seemed to find a rhythm against the Yankees. He walked four and gave up one run and three hits in his shortest appearance since lasting only three innings at Boston in his second start. But he stranded seven runners in those five innings -- four in scoring position. His 38-pitch fifth inning -- as harrowing as it was -- may have been his best. Chris Stewart hit a leadoff single, Derek Jeter walked and Curtis Granderson struck out before Teixeira walked, loading the bases for Rodriguez. He began swinging outside the batters box as the theme from "Jaws" played and the Rays huddled on the mound. "Thats not the position that I want to be in against anybody, especially against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium," Price said. Fans stood and cheered, then got louder with each pitch Rodriguez fouled off as he worked the count full. After A-Rod fouled off five of them, Price got him to swing and miss on a breaking ball that curved into the far lower corner of the strike zone, and Rodriguez stormed back to the dugout, talking to himself as boos rained down. With the air let out of the stadium, Cano grounded out to second to end the inning. Cano fell to 1 for 12 with the bases full this season. Rodriguez is 1 for 10. "That was the game, I thought." Maddon said. "That was the game. That game could have gone the other way." Rodriguez also made a two-base throwing error during the Rays two-run third inning, sailing the ball over Teixeiras head at first base on Elliot Johnsons one-out grounder The miscue led to two unearned runs, with Ben Zobrist singling home Johnson and scoring on B.J. Uptons sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead. "We gave them an extra out," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought CC threw pretty well, they just put their hits together. He kept us in the game." The Rays scored twice in the ninth, too. Nick Swisher mishandled Drew Suttons double in right, allowing Matt Joyce to score, and Johnson doubled home Sutton. Sabathia (7-3) got the worse end of the untidy pitchers duel. He allowed three earned runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings. "Its a good lineup, that team," Sabathia said. "Theyre always at the top of the division." Sutton hit a two-run double into the left-field corner in the fourth. Jose Lobaton singled in the Rays first run, in the second. The Yankees tied it in the bottom half when Swisher came home on a groundout by Stewart after taking third on a wild pitch. DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies needed a late rally to give them their first series sweep in more than two months. It was a comeback that left the Milwaukee Brewers shaking their heads. Tyler Colvin hit a two-run double in the ninth inning and the Rockies rallied to beat the Brewers 7-6 on Wednesday. "We play pretty good baseball and then give it up at the end," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. Wilin Rosario started the rally with a one-out pinch-hit single to centre off reliever Jim Henderson (0-2). Eric Young Jr., who homered earlier in the game, also singled to put runners at the corners. Colvin followed with a double down the first base line past a diving Corey Hart, scoring the speedy Young from first and giving the Rockies their first sweep since May 28-31. "Youre running out of superlatives about the good hes been doing," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said of Young. "Today its his bat and his legs. Hes probably the only guy whos scoring from first base on the ball that was hit there." The ball hugged the line, making right fielder Norichika Aoki cover a lot of ground to get to it. Young turned on the speed when he realized Hart didnt come up with the ball. "I heard the crowd so I knew Corey missed it and then just tried to put it in my highest gear," Young said. "As soon as I touched second base there was no hesitation." He easily beat a high relay throw to home, giving Colorado its first three-game winning streak since June 1. Colvin, who had two hits, notched his first walkoff hit of the season. "I was a little surprised the ball got down the line," Colvin said. "I knew they were going to play no doubles and play pretty deep. I didnt hit it to the wall so he had to run a long way for it, which gave EY a chance to run. "Its pretty exciting right there, especially when you get to watch EY run." Will Harris (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his first major league win. Chris Nelson had two hits and drove in three runs and Carlos Gonzalez had two hits for the Rockies. Rickie Weeks had three hits and Nyjer Morgan had two hits and three RBIs for the Brewers, who have lost five of six. The Brewers used a five-run fifth inniing to overcome an early 4-0 deficit and chase starter Guillermo Moscoso.dddddddddddd Weeks and Corey Hart had RBI doubles, Morgan had a two-run single off reliever Carlos Torres and Jean Segura hit a sacrifice fly. The Rockies tied it in the bottom of the sixth on Nelsons RBI single, but Hart scored on Morgans single with two outs in the seventh to make it 6-5. Starter Mark Rogers, who rejoined the team Tuesday after the birth of his daughter a day earlier, shook off a rough start. He allowed five runs and seven hits, walked two and struck out four but failed in his bid for his first major league win after Hendersons blown save. "That was a frustrating one, really frustrating," Henderson said. "I want to come in and get the job done obviously, tough to handle." For the third straight game, the Rockies jumped out to a big lead in the first inning. This time, they scored all their runs with two outs. With runners on the corners, Ramon Hernandezs single to centre scored Colvin. Jordan Pacheco walked to load the bases and Nelson followed with a two-run single to left. The Brewers escaped further damage when Pacheco was tagged out in a rundown between third and home. "Were going to have to figure out something better as starters," Roenicke said. "Shouldnt be giving up that many in the first. Weve got to get better with the pitching." Young made it 4-0 with a two-out, solo homer in the third. It was his fourth of the year and second in as many games. NOTES: The 23,411 fans at Coors Field clapped when it was announced Seattles Felix Hernandez had thrown a perfect game. ... Milwaukees Ryan Braun was held out of the lineup. Roenicke said Braun, who is mired in a 6-for-42 slump, told him "Nothing else is working so why dont we try to do this?
