MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- Mark Sanchez plans on staying put after this season. As unlikely as it may seem because of his hefty contract, the injured quarterback wants to return to the New York Jets. And, Sanchez joked, he could be back with a super-powered arm. "The way things are coming along, it sounds like Ill be bionic," Sanchez said with a big smile Tuesday. "I dont want to say like Rookie of the Year, but hopefully something like that, where Ill come back better." Sanchez is out for the season after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder in the preseason and having surgery early last month. He spoke publicly Tuesday for the first time since his surgery before volunteering at a community soup kitchen at Church of the Redeemer in Morristown. The quarterback has three years remaining on his contract, but his $13.1 million salary cap number for next season makes it unlikely the team would keep him at that amount. If it were up to Sanchez, though, he wouldnt go anywhere. "Thats all Im thinking about, coming back next year, leading this team and playing well," he said. "I know Ive heard a lot of stuff on the outside about me not being here and stuff like that. I dont know if thats necessarily the case in the building. Hopefully, not. Hopefully, Im a Jet. "Thats where I am. Thats where I want to be." When asked if he truly sees a future in New York as the Jets quarterback, Sanchez didnt hesitate. "Absolutely," he said. "I mean, theres no doubt about that. Its been a dream come true to play here and I dont want to go anywhere else, thats for sure. I know I have (three) years left, and I dont ever want that to end. I love being a Jet and I plan on being here." Sanchez has not spoken to the team about his future with the franchise, but it would make financial sense for the Jets to release him in March. Thats when a $2 million roster bonus is due, and the move would save the Jets $8.3 million in cap space. "Well see what happens," he said. Sanchez was injured in the Jets third preseason game against the Giants when Marvin Austin slammed into his shoulder. Coach Rex Ryan was heavily criticized for putting Sanchez in the game in relief of rookie Geno Smith because it was widely assumed the veteran had likely won the quarterback competition -- and was playing with mostly backups and third-stringers at the time of the injury. While his doctors have been happy with his progress, Sanchez acknowledged it has been tough to be a spectator while bouncing between doctor visits in New Jersey, California and Florida. "Its definitely different, something I dont wish on anybody," he said. "Not even on your worst enemy you dont wish this on. Its hard to be away. Its hard to not be in the locker room, be on the plane, be on the bus. Little things like that, you miss it so much. "All the wins, even the tough times, the struggles, it makes you appreciate those times and how much you love being out on the field and how much you love playing." In an ironic twist, the Jets could actually use Sanchez in a big way at this point. He looked mostly solid during the summer in Marty Mornhinwegs system before the injury. "Its just tearing me up that I cant play for him," Sanchez said. Smith is struggling mightily with one touchdown and 10 interceptions in his last six games, but the only other options are inexperienced backup Matt Simms and veteran David Garrard, who hasnt played a regular-season game since 2010. Through it all, Sanchez focuses only on getting back on the field. "This could be a blessing in disguise," he said. "A lot of people have told me that. Its hard to see that while youre going through it, but it does give you a different perspective." NOTES: Sanchez created a stir on Twitter last week when a picture of him wearing his hair in corn rows surfaced. He said it was the result of losing a bet to a friend, and chose the corn rows -- which he had for only a few days and were gone Tuesday -- over shaving his head or dying his hair. "It was pretty bad," he said. "It was ugly." ... Jets owner Woody Johnson was nominated by the team for the NFLs Salute to Service Award, presented by the league and USAA for "commitment to honouring and supporting the military community." . The contract was reached over the weekend, pending a physical, the person told The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to finalize the deal. Pelfrey made $4.1 million last season in a one-year deal with the Twins, including $100,000 in a performance bonus for surpassing 150 innings in his first season back from elbow ligament- replacement surgery. Mickelson barely made the cut but had the best round of the day with nine birdies and an eagle coupled with two bogeys to sit two shots behind leader Craig Lee of Scotland. Lee shot a 69 for a 12-under 204 total. "I just love the fact I am in contention and have an opportunity in my first tournament of the year here in Abu Dhabi," Mickelson said.DENVER -- Dishing the ball to the open man in the first half opened the door to Randy Foyes offensive surge in the second half. Foye scored 24 of his 30 points in the last 24 minutes, going 7 for 7 from the field in the third quarter, and the Denver Nuggets hung on to beat the Houston Rockets 123-116 on Wednesday night. Kenneth Faried had 23 points and Timofey Mozgov added 22 for the Nuggets, who beat the Rockets for the first time in three tries this season. Foye also had 15 assists, 11 of them coming in the first half. "I just think it was a Karma thing, where in the beginning, I had some shots where I could have come off (pick-and-rolls) and pulled up, but I passed it to Kenneth, passed it to Timo, got those guys going," Foye said. "That kind of opened everything up. When I was coming off pick-and-rolls later, they were so concerned with our bigs that I was coming off and knocking them down." Houston coach Kevin McHale said the Rockets have to play stronger defensively. "Our defence is bad," he said. "Faried and Mozgov were just running down the floor, posting us up and throwing us out of the way. We had no answers for them. In the third quarter, we got them somewhat under control and then Foye went crazy." Jeremy Lin led eight Houston players in double figures with 18 points. Both teams were missing key players heading into the game and the Rockets got a scare when James Harden, leading a fast break, banged his left shin in a collision with Aaron Brooks midway through the third quarter. Fouled on the play, Harden made both free throws and left the game briefly to have the leg tended to before returning to action, though he only played sparingly aafter the injury.dddddddddddd "I guess I got kneed in the shin but it was pretty painful. For a couple of seconds, my leg was numb," Harden said. In the post-season, Harden said he would have finished the game. "But today was kind of pointless. Four more games left and were trying to stay (in the No. 4 playoff seed)," Harden said. Houstons Dwight Howard, bothered by a left ankle sprain, did not play for the 10th time in the last 12 games. Denver was without Wilson Chandler (left groin strain) and Ty Lawson (left ankle sprain). Trailing by 10 at the half, Houston pulled to 94-86 on a jumper by Chandler Parsons late in the third quarter. Foye, though, hit a long jumper, starting an 11-2 run over a 2 1/2-minute stretch that put Denver in front 105-88 heading into the fourth quarter. Houston made a late push, getting within 118-114 on a 3-pointer by Troy Daniels and a tip-in by Isaiah Canaan with 2:24 left to play. But Foye banked in a jumper and Evan Fournier connected on a 3-pointer in successive Denver possessions to fend off the Rockets rally. The Rockets, trailing by as many as 19 points earlier in the game, put together an 8-0 burst to cut the deficit to 58-53 with 1:44 left in the second quarter. Lin and Parsons each had 3-pointers in the stretch. Faried responded by converting a three-point play, helping Denver rebuild its lead to 68-58 at halftime. NOTES: The Rockets are 8-19 when trailing at halftime. ... Houston, which beat the Lakers in Los Angeles on Tuesday, fell to 5-4 in the second game of back-to-backs this season. ... Foye scored 30 or more points for the second time this season. He had a season-high 33 on Jan. 29 against Charlotte. ' ' '
