SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah has been looking for players to hit outside shots and get the Jazz off to a fast start. Mo Williams and Marvin Williams did just that, combining for 18 first-quarter points on 6-of-8 shooting in Friday nights 97-81 preseason victory over Oklahoma City. "Obviously our first game is going to be a little crazy. I think we made tremendous strides from our last game offensively and defensively," Marvin Williams said of rebounding from a road loss Monday to Golden State. Utahs first field goal came on Marvin Williams 3-pointer, and Mo Williams made his first four shots as the Jazz led by as many as 10 in the opening quarter. It was Mo Williams home debut since being acquired in a multiteam trade this summer -- nine years after the Jazz drafted him in the second round in 2003. "It wasnt odd at all," Mo Williams said of playing for the Jazz again at home. "It felt really good. Its the same people that were here when I was here." He was referring to some of the fans, and head coach Tyrone Corbin, who was just coming on board as an assistant when Williams was leaving for Milwaukee. Corbin was glad to have him back. "The way he can push the ball and ... see where different guys will be and ... how we follow (his pace), I think hes continued to grow with this team," Corbin said. Mo Williams finished with 15 points in 23 minutes to lead the Jazz. Gordon Hayward added 13 despite an 0-for-6 start while Al Jefferson had 12 points. Reserve Enes Kanter had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Oklahoma City was without numerous key players, but hurt itself with 21 turnovers that led to 27 Utah points. "The game wasnt a good game for us," said Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks, who still has several starters out and sat point guard Russell Westbrook so he could take a look at others. "There was no doubt we turned the ball over too many times, we took too many bad shots." He was pleased, though, with the effort of 6-11 forward Perry Jones, who played 30 minutes and led Oklahoma City with 14 points on 6 of 11 shooting. "He is a versatile guy," Brooks said. "He can score inside, he can score outside and he has a good feel for the game, but with that being said, he still has a learning curve that will take place." Forward Kevin Durant played only 19 minutes and finished with nine points, three assists, two rebounds and a blocked shot. Marvin Williams, acquired in a trade with Atlanta, had the early matchup against Durant. "Its a tough assignment," said forward Derrick Favours, who started for Utah in place of Paul Millsap. "You cant stop (Durant) from scoring but you can make it tough. He did that." The game was a chance for both teams to look at young players. Fifteen Jazz players had played by halftime. The Jazz got off to a fast start behind two of their new additions, with Mo Williams scoring 10 first-quarter points and Marvin Williams adding eight as Utah took command early. The Jazz were without Millsap and backup point guard Jamaal Tinsley, both excused for personal reasons. The Thunder did not play Sixth Man Award winner James Harden because of a groin injury, and remain without Kendrick Perkins (wrist surgery) and Thabo Sefolosha (bruised quad). Brooks had specific goals early, and one of them was on the boards. He was pleased that his team limited the Jazz to four offensive rebounds in the first half. But he was hoping to see some solid play from his backup point guards. Reggie Jackson got the start and finished with 10 points, but made just 3 of 10 shots and had seven turnovers. "Im disappointed with my performance," Jackson said. "I was trying to make too many home-run plays instead of just making plays." Eric Maynor played 12 minutes and had four points on 2 of 8 shooting. Serge Ibaka, in his first game since the Olympics, finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for Oklahoma City. He missed the preseason opener because of a bruised quad. Cole Aldrich added 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Thunder but had several of his own shots swatted by Favours. Favours finished with three blocks but didnt get the call on a few others, including a hustle play when Jackson appeared headed for a fast-break layup after a Jazz turnover. He said he felt "cheated" out of a few blocks, but wasnt worried about shooting 0 of 5 and finishing with 1 point. "Im a defensive player; the shots will fall," Favors said. NOTES: Jazz rookie Kevin Murphy made his preseason debut with 3:11 left in the second quarter and finished with two points. ... Asked about Jazz 6-11 backup centre Kanter dropping 51 pounds to 242 this off-season, Thunder coach Scott Brooks quipped, "Hes a small forward now." ... Oklahoma City dropped to 0-2 in preseason after going undefeated during the NBAs abbreviated 2011 preseason schedule. ... Other than the 2007 season when he missed five games with the Edmonton Eskimos, Ray has never missed more than one game in a season since his rookie year in 2002. So when the Toronto Argonauts traded for him last winter, they not only got one of the leagues top quarterbacks, they also got its most durable. LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears reached the Super Bowl under coach Lovie Smith and consistently boasted a formidable defence. However, they missed the playoffs too many times, never solved their problems on offence and even after a 10-win season they are moving on without him. The Bears fired Smith on Monday after the team missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons. General manager Phil Emery delivered the news to Smith on the day after the Bears beat Detroit to finish 10-6 but still didnt make the playoffs. Hired in 2004, Smith led the 2006 team to the Super Bowl, but he also saw his team collapse in the second half of the past two seasons. He was let go with a year left on his contract, ending a nine-year run that produced an 81-63 record, three division titles and two appearances in the NFC championship game. The Bears scheduled a news conference with Emery for Tuesday to discuss the move. Smith was not available for comment, but talked to the team after he was fired. "He earned even more respect from me, if it was possible," quarterback Jay Cutler said. "He handled it the right way. A lot of character in that man, and it showed up." Emery appears to be moving quickly in the search for a replacement. A person familiar with the situation said Denver Broncos offensive co-ordinator Mike McCoy will interview for the Bears and Arizona Cardinals jobs this week. The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because he wasnt authorized to publicly speak about the interviews, said the talks would take place in Denver. Even though Chicago closed with a win, the Bears needed a loss by Minnesota to get into the playoffs. The Vikings, though, beat Green Bay to clinch a post-season spot, leaving Chicago as the second team since the post-season expanded to 12 teams to miss out after a 7-1 start. The other was Washington in 1996. Smith ranks third on the Bears wins list behind George Halas and Mike Ditka. The highlight of his tenure was the run to the title game that ended with a loss to the Indianapolis Colts. It was the first time two black coaches met for the championship, with Smith going against his mentor Tony Dungy. The 2010 team lost to Green Bay in the NFC title game, but the Bears made the playoffs just three times and won three post-season games under Smith. There was speculation he would be let go following the 2011 teams collapse, but he got one more year while general manager Jerry Angelo was fired. Now, hes out. Return star Devin Hester was so upset he said he was considering retirement, adding, "Ive got my workers comp papers in my pocket." Is he hurt? "Not physically, but mentally," Hestter said.dddddddddddd He wasnt ruling out playing next year, either. While Smith was dismissed, there was no official word on the status of assistant coaches. "I think were going to get the best available co-ordinator, head coach, assistant coaches," Cutler said. "(Im not going) to speculate where theyre going to go. I have no idea. But I trust Phil and everyone involved in the search, and theyre going to make the best decisions they can make." Known for solid defences, Smith oversaw a unit that was consistently effective and at times ranked among the leagues best with stars such as Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and later Julius Peppers. Smith emphasized taking the ball away from the opposition, and no team did it more than the Bears with 310 during his tenure. But on the other side, it was a different story. Smith went through four offensive co-ordinators in Terry Shea, Ron Turner, Mike Martz and Mike Tice. He never could find the right formula, even as the Bears acquired stars such as quarterback Jay Cutler and receiver Brandon Marshall over the years. Smith had no bigger supporter than team matriarch Virginia McCaskey, but the fans seemed split on him. "The media, the false fans, you all got what you all wanted," Hester said. "The majority of you all wanted him out. As players we wanted him in. I guess the fans -- the false fans -- out-ruled us. I thought he was a great coach, probably one of the best coaches Ive ever been around. He brought me in." History suggests fans hoping for a high-profile replacement such as Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden might be disappointed. The last time the Bears went with an experienced NFL head coach was when Halas returned to the sideline in 1958. They might, however, go with an offensive-minded coach for the first time since Mike Ditka was fired after the 1992 season, given the issues in that area. That the Bears would be in this spot seemed unthinkable after they won seven of their first eight games, but the schedule took a tougher turn. Injuries mounted and so did the losses. It was similar to last season when they finished 8-8 after a 7-3 start, a collapse sparked by a season-ending injury to Cutler. Dismissing Smith was the first move in what looks like a busy off-season. Urlacher has an expiring contract and was limited by knee and hamstring injuries this year. The Bears might have a decision to make on Cutler, who has one more year left on his contract. "I think, first and foremost, their concern is going to be with finding coaches, and well address it from there," he said. ------ AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Stapleton in Englewood, Colo., contributed to this story.
