Jessica Ennis is the queen of the heptathlon. Ennis broke away from the pack late and won the 800m - an event that was just a formality - as she went wire-to-wire to the capture gold medal and establish a new national heptathlon record at the London 2012 Olympic Games. She becomes the first Brit to win an Olympic athletics gold in London in 104 years. Canadian Jessica Zelinka finished in seventh place. Upon completing the race, she hugged fellow Canadian Brianne Theisen, who finished in 11th. Ennis, one of Great Britains medal hopefuls, was quickly associated as one of the faces of the Games, and did not disappoint from the moment she kicked off her events in front of a raucous home crowd at Olympic Stadium. She got to business early, blazing to a win in the 100m hurdles in her first event, and did it in a world-best time of 12.54 seconds. She continued to pile on points with both consistency and brilliance: on top of the world-best time, she finished second in two otherevents (long jump, 200m) and did not finish outside the top 10 in any event-including her two weakest, shot put and javelin. When she won the 800m, she collapsed to the track in joy, and was quickly adorned with the British flag as she took her victory lap. She finished with 6955 points, breaking her own record and distancing herself from the nearest competitor by 327 points. Tatyana Chernova, who started the day in ninth place after four events, climbed all the way back to claim the silver medal. Ukrainian Lyudmyla Yosypenko took the bronze, narrowly edging out Lithuanias Austra Skuyjtye, who was in second place heading into the final race. Zelinkas hopes of capturing a medal were dashed when she was forced to play catch-up after the second event - the high jump - when she cleared just 1.68m. But the 30-year-old battled back into contention, putting together back-to-back personal best performances in both shot put and the 200m, which had her in third place at the end of the first day. But even with a season-best long jump mark of 5.91m to start the second day, it was only good enough for the 23rd best distance, sending her to 10th overall. Her javelin throw of 45.75m pushed her back to eighth, and a second place finish to Ennis in the 800m landed her in sixth. "I got a second chance after day one, but I just couldnt do it. Im so sorry. It was a hard race, but we are all pleased for Ennis," she said. "I really need a hug from my dad." It was the second time Ennis edged out Zelinka for first during the competition. Zelinka picked up a personal-best time of 12.65s to finish behind Ennis in the 100m hurdles. Her final score of 6480 is 10 points less than her score when she finished fifth at Beijing 2008, and is off her national mark that she set this year of 6599. Theisen, making her first Olympic appearance, finished the heptathlon with 6383 points, 10 points off her personal best score. The Humboldt, Sask. natives best event was the 800m, where she finished in third place. She also set a personal-best distance of 6.01m in the long jump. Discount Michael Kors Handbags . Well, its not so much mail as tweets, so... a Tweet Bag! Wave of the future. Anyway, every Sunday Ill pluck a few questions from my Twitter @replies to give a little more than 140 characters to, because shockingly not all answers can be reduced to a microblogging thought bubble. So keep sending me questions all week and Ill feature my faves here each weekend. And now, without further ado, here is our first batch. @OnceUponATwimewheres the logic behind DeRozans new contract extension? Thats a tricky question to kick off with because there is a difference between what the logic was for the team and whether that logic will resonate with people outside the organization. Put simply, the Raptors believe tremendously in DeRozans potential and wanted to do everything in their power to keep him with the franchise. Next summer there are a small handful of teams that will posses "max" cap room , among them the Cavs, Mavs, Kings and Bucks, and the Raptors were afraid that someone would grossly overpay him to pry him away from Toronto. DeRozan is still young at 23 and has a work ethic that has made a huge impact on the coaches and management and they felt that all of that warranted a four-year extension worth a reported $40-million. Now, that logic doesnt really hold a lot of water outside of the ACC. Just because you are afraid that someone COULD overpay your guy doesnt mean you HAVE to beat them to the punch. Restricted free agency is a game that is weighted in the teams favour, and the Raptors could have matched any offer that DeRozan got on the open market. In addition to that, shooting guards that cant shoot, pass, rebound or defend all that well dont tend to set teams tongues wagging. O.J. Mayo, Lou Williams and Nick Young were all guards that had a better PER than DeRozan last year and all ended up with deals around of half of DeRozans. The Raptors were trying to mitigate risk, I get that, but issue at hand here is that they didnt need to. DeRozan still has A LOT to prove as a player and you dont pay guys assuming theyll produce one day when the system is designed to let you take the wait and see approach. This may have been a case of the Raptors looking at DeRozan and seeing Eric Gordon or James Harden, max-contract guys, and everyone else taking a more sober view of DeRozans potential. @andrew2doucetteIf this season iis "building" and the team at best sneaks into 8th who do they target next year? Or do Ross-JV just get better? Id be less focused on who the team is focusing on next year and look instead at who they might be focusing on this year.dddddddddddd. The Raptors are not a well-balanced outfit. Most of their talent plays the same position (power forward) and the seasons first two games have demonstrated just how weak the team is offensively on the wings, especially with the second unit. Jose Calderons expiring $10.6-million contract is an asset that Colangelo has said repeatedly will be thrown into potential trade scenarios, and you have to figure that Linas Kleiza is hardly a permanent member of the teams core. However, the guy Id keep my eye on is Andrea Bargnani. With the Raptors handing out huge money to DeRozan this week, the Raptors have saddled themselves with two players - Bargnani and DeRozan - that play inefficient offense and less-than-stellar defence (they also dont rebound, pass or shoot threes as a high percentage). That is not an arrangement that is going to work for very long. Dont be surprised if the Raptors make a big splash on the trade market long before next summer arrives. @CaptMaverick85why cant the #raptors keep a lead under coach Casey? Bad coaching during crunch time? I dont know if this is a situation where Casey is totally at fault. While his insistence on using five-man bunch units must be curtailed (Torontos reserve crew is not talented enough to support that course of action), at the end of the day the Raptors dont really have a sense of identity yet and that usually manifests most pointedly at the end of games. Consider that the team desperately wants to be seen as an elite defensive outfit, yet down the stretch of Torontos first two games they had Bargnani, DeRozan AND Calderon on the court at the same time. Thats the teams three worst defensive players making up three-fifths of Torontos closing unit. David West shredded them in the fourth quarter on Wednesday and down the stretch Sunday MarShon Brooks and C.J. Watson scored six huge points, both while being guarded by Calderon. Casey wants his best players out there in crunch time, but most of those guys are only best at one end of the court. So, all that being said, maybe it is bad coaching in crunch time, but Casey is also deprived of options with this roster as currently constructed. ' ' '
