Since he is currently the only Canadian in position to claim an Olympic berth, it would be considered a major upset if Gomez failed to qualify for London 2012.WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:Because of the gruelling nature and distance of the event, the race walk at Trials will only be a 10km race. This means that any athlete who wants to make it to the Olympic Games in Race Walk would need to have reached the Olympic qualifying standard time prior to Calgary.Gomez achieved the A+ standard time (1:21:07) early in the season, finishing eighth at an IAAF event in China with a time of 1:21:05 – his career best time in thee event.dddddddddddd He followed that up with another A standard time (1:22:30) at last months meet in Saransk, RUS. Gomez finished 14th in that race with a time of 1:21:58.There was another Olympic hopeful, Evan Dunfee, looking to join Gomez in London, but it appears that his hopes have faded. While Dunfee achieved better than a B standard time this qualifying period—he completed a personal best 1:23:45 at the Naumburg International in Germany—but because of Gomezs success, Dunfee needed to secure an A standard time ahead of Trials.There is only one IAAF-sanctioned event left before Trials, which runs June 17th in Italy. Dunfee, who is not yet scheduled to participate in that event, would need an A standard to be eligible to qualify for the Olympic Games at Trials.MEDAL HOPES IN LONDON 2012:Gomezs personal best was just a few seconds off the national record set by Arturo Huerta in July of 2000. Realistically, Gomez would need to get his time under 1:20:00 just to break the top 15 in London 2012.Gomez has said in interviews that the goal is not necessarily to win a medal now, but to continue to build experience the Rio 2016 Summer Games.The best time this year is held by Italys Alex Schwazer, who finished a 20km race walk in 1:17:30.
