ASHBURN, Va. -- Weve seen the fourth-quarter comeback. Weve seen the Barney socks. Weve heard about the studiousness and the leadership. Weve heard the disarming jokes. Where does one stop and the other start? For Robert Griffin III, its a well-defined line. "Cant be on all the time," the rookie quarterback said with a smile and a shrug as he strolled through the Washington Redskins locker room Wednesday. "Guys would get discouraged. Youve gotta be fun to be around." Athletes are well-known for having on-off switches. Some of the nicest guys around become maniacs when they put on a uniform. Still, knowing when to be goofy and when to be serious isnt as straightforward as it sounds, as anyone in any workplace knows. Teammates and coaches say Griffin already has it down pat, even though hes just arrived in the NFL. "Real professionals are able to do that," linebacker Lorenzo Alexander said. "Some players arent able to separate the two, but he has a great knack, especially for a young guy." The Barney dinosaur socks made another appearance in the locker room a week ago. Griffins weekly session with reporters is always good for at least a couple of good chuckles. Before Sundays game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he was high-fiving and posing with fans when he emerged from the tunnel -- something most players dont do -- then flipped on the serious side in a matter of moments to start pregame warmups. By the end of the game, any doubt that Griffin studies the playbook and takes practice seriously was eradicated when a malfunctioning headset forced him to improvise during the game-winning drive in the final two minutes. Griffin cleverly anticipated a blitz on the second play based on the result of the first play, so he called a quick pass that turned into a 20-yard gain for tight end Fred Davis. Once the 24-22 win was complete and the Redskins were 2-2, Griffin naturally was in a festive mood with his teammates, but he was the only quarterback to celebrate a victory Sunday by stopping to sit on the stadium tunnel floor and do the now-familiar "Griffining" pose with Olympic track and field medallist Kellie Wells. "Everybodys got a different personality," coach Mike Shanahan said. "Robert, its very natural for him to be very businesslike. He does have a great sense of humour, where he can change very quickly from being very serious to being in a very jovial, joking mood. But things come pretty easy to him." Teammates say its no doubt a product of Griffins background. Both parents were in the military, where on-duty and off-duty are clearly delineated. "He was just brought up in that sense to know that, hey, when its business, its business," receiver Santana Moss said. "Hes all about business when youre really around him, and then being a young guy, youre going to have to live some time -- and you can see that in him. He has fun. You can tell that this is not just something that he dreamed about and now hes here. Nah, he takes this very seriously." Notes: Griffin wore pink cleats and a pink left glove at practice as part of the NFLs annual breast cancer awareness campaign. The sleeve he always wears on his left arm was white, but he said a pink sleeve was on the way. ... Sundays game was the first in which Griffin deliberately put his hands in the air after handing the ball off instead of pretending he still had it, part of a plan to reduce the number of hard hits he takes from defenders. Shanahan also made it to point to discuss the matter with the referee before the game. "One time I carried out my fake and didnt put my hands up, and he came and found me, and he said: Make sure you put your hands up," Griffin said. "They protected me a lot more out there as a quarterback, which is how its supposed to be." ... The 12-0 vote by City Council came after starkly contrasting predictions about what the $1.5 billion project would mean for an economically troubled city that has fretted over the loss of professional football since the Raiders and Rams fled Southern California in 1994. Supporters said the deal with developer Anschutz Entertainment Group would create thousands of jobs, a hub of civic pride and new tax dollars for cash-starved City Hall, while critics warned that affordable housing would vanish in the neighbourhood while traffic would come to a virtual standstill on game days. ATLANTA -- Brandon Beachy learned an important lesson in his first career shutout: The ninth inning is a blast. Beachy improved his major league-best ERA with a five-hitter and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 7-0 Thursday night. The shutout came in the first career complete game for Beachy (5-1), who hadnt lasted longer than 7 1-3 innings. The right-hander said he went straight to Braves closer Craig Kimbrel after the game. "I told Craig Im jealous. You get to do this all the time," Beachy said. "I got pumped up there in the last inning. Thats a lot of fun." Beachy had two strikeouts in the ninth to cap Atlantas first shutout of the season. He has won five straight decisions since losing his first start. He had no walks and six strikeouts and lowered his ERA from 1.60 to 1.33. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez and pitching coach Roger McDowell allowed Beachy to remain in the game after throwing 110 pitches through eight innings. "Roger and I were hanging on every pitch," Gonzalez said. "You want the kid to be successful. You want him to have the complete game. You want him to have the shutout, but you want to keep him healthy." Beachy finished with 122 pitches. "The pitch count thing is irrelevant in my opinion," said Braves catcher Brian McCann. "Its how many stressful pitches you throw, and he didnt throw very many." Freddie Freeman homered and Chipper Jones, Michael Bourn, Martin Prado and Tyler Pastornicky each had two hits as the Braves outhit the Marlins 12-5 and split the two-game series. The Braves improved to 18-5 with Jones in the starting lineup. They are 6-10 in games he did not start. Ricky Nolasco (4-2) gave up four runs on seven hits in four innings as he was denied his bid for sole possession of the Marlins record for career wins. Nolasco, who is tied with Dontrelle Willis at 68 wins, has lasted less than five innings in two straight losses. "He threw better than what he showed," said Miami manager Ozzie Guillen, who removed Nolasco for a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning. "Thats what I hate about the National League; you have to take the pitcher out for offence," Guillen said. Nolasco said he "couldnt catch a break" even though he said he &qquot;made a lot of good pitches," even on Freemans homer.dddddddddddd "Balls were finding holes and stuff," he said. "Theres nothing I can do there. Thats baseball." Bourn led off the first with a single and scored on Prados triple just beyond the reach of centerfielder Emilio Bonifacio. The Braves added two runs with two outs in the third. Freeman launched a high homer, his seventh, to right field. Dan Uggla walked and scored on Brian McCanns double past a diving Logan Morrison in left field. The ball skipped past Morrison and bounced to the wall, allowing Uggla to score easily. Jason Heyward was caught stealing after he was hit by a pitch to open the fourth. The Braves still had a productive inning as Pastornicky singled, moved to second on Beachys sacrifice and scored on Bourns single up the middle for a 4-0 lead. With dark clouds hovering and lightning flashing over Turner Field, the Marlins stranded runners on second and third in the fifth. After singles by Gaby Sanchez and pinch-hitter Austin Kearns, Jose Reyes lined out to right field to end the inning. The Braves added three runs in the fifth off Chad Gaudin, who walked freeman and Uggla to start the inning. Jones, Heyward and Beachy had run-scoring singles. The Marlins had another scoring opportunity when Giancarlo Stanton led off the seventh with a double. Stanton was left standing on second as Beachy struck out Brett Hayes to end the inning. Notes: Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, watched the game from a seat near the Braves dugout. ... Beachys previous longest start was 7 1-3 innings in two games, most recently on April 20 at Arizona. ...
