Mike McCarthy couldn't be in worse spot

DETROIT If Mike McCarthy is anal about anything, it probably would be the wear and tear his football team is going through.

On Thursday, McCarthy has no choice but to discard almost everything he holds near and dear and ask his players to take one for the team.

The Green Bay Packers couldn't be in a worse spot than they find themselves at Ford Field. McCarthy surely has never faced anything quite like this assignment in seven plus seasons as their coach.

Everything seems stacked against the Packers.

Aaron Rodgers is going to miss a fourth straight game, and their injury list might be as long as that of any team in the National Football League.

They just got done playing an astronomical 174 snaps from scrimmage on a 19 degree day in a physical game against an archrival in their first overtime tie since 1987.

It's a short week, and they're the team doing the traveling.

And their opponent, the Detroit Lions, is about as desperate as desperate can be.

Even with Rodgers, it would be a rugged situation. With their fourth starting quarterback in as many weeks, well, you get the drift.

Of course, the Packers can win. Many will predict them to do exactly that, partly because the Lions seem to be falling apart late in the season as they almost always do under the disjointed leadership of coach Jim Schwartz.

Still, the Lions are favored by 6 points, and for good reason.

There's tremendous advantage to being at home on Thanksgiving. The Lions played just 128 snaps from scrimmage Sunday in their loss to tail ender Tampa Bay, during which the crowd at Ford Field booed lustily. And they're h... among the healthiest teams in the league.

On a wall near McCarthy's office [url=http://www.seahawksofficialprostore.com/WOMENS-EARL-THOMAS-III-JERSEY.html]... Thomas III Seahawks Jersey
is a board on which every segment of every practice the man has conducted in Green Bay is listed. He gazes 12th Fan Elite Jersey upon it all the time, too, searching for clues how to give his team a physical edge.

It wouldn't surprise me if spreadsheets enumerating the number of snaps in every one of those practices were readily accessible as well.

Since 2006, when McCarthy worked the team too long and paid for it with an embarrassing exhibition game in Cincinnati and slow regular season start, he has forced himself to pull back in practice each time his inclination was to do more.

Picture McCarthy slumped in his office late Sunday afternoon when fatigue set in and the enormity of his position began to hit home.

The tie with the Vikings was both good and bad. The physical toll that had been exacted was frightful.

Precisely what McCarthy didn't want to happen going to Detroit had happened.

At some point a functionary would have handed him a sheet of paper with the playing time totals and then left the coach alone. Forgive the man if a steady stream of invective didn't pour out.

You think snap counts aren't important?

To McCarthy, they're just about everything when it comes to preparing a football team.

Lessening the physical burden on players has guided McCarthy's substitution patterns for many years. He's in it now to win another championship, which to him means having the freshest roster possible for the postseason.

McCarthy was going to use more seah... people from scrimmage than possibly ever before, before the onslaught of injuries ruined his plans. Perhaps his deepest team became one of his thinnest, and in the last month McCarthy's sole focus became using every healthy body available to sneak into the playoffs.

Imagine McCarthy running his index finger down the offense. It had played 94 snaps, 10 more than in any other game in [url=http://www.seahawksofficialprostore.com/WOMENS-EARL-THOMAS-III-JERSEY.html]... Thomas III Elite Jersey
the last 3 1/2 years and way more than the 10 game average of 68.4.

Every offensive lineman played 94 snaps, several despite injury. Jordy Nelson logged 93 (he's missed just 31 of 778) and James Jones, bad knee and all, had 90.

Counting his additional 12 snaps on special teams, Andrew Quarless was down for 82. Eddie Lacy, who was averaging 44.3, would have had even more than 70 if his asthma hadn't acted up.

In all, the defense was on the field for 80 snaps 12th Fan Womens Jersey at the same time the Lions' defense was playing 52.

Morgan Burnett played all 80 plus another 12 on special teams. Counting special teams, Davon House posted two more than Burnett with 94.
